What's the name of this program?
I remember back at Primary school (about 10 years ago), there was a program on the computers that you could make your own music with.. It was just a screen with a timebar on it, and you had a selection of loads of noises, instruments, percussion, etc etc that you could choose and then put on the timebar thing.

This way you could create your own music, it was really good fun and was pretty easy to use.

I have no idea at all what the program was called and Googling hasn't helped at all.. any suggestions?
Pretty much any sequencer software there is.
Well it was designed to be easy for kids to use so it narrows it down a bit.

Since it was a Mac program I'd say Logic.
eJay?
My guess is dance ejay, we had it at school.

Could have been Ejay, cheers guys.

FWIW it was for Windows, but hey.
it was ejay
I remember MTV Music Maker on PS2. The creations i came up with were horrible...

If you plan to make some music, don't use one of those programs that come with pre-defined stuff and keep you limited to that. Go for something serious instead (Fruity Loops, Reason, a hardware sampler, etc).
Ideally I'd like to start producing stuff as nothing more than a hobby. The master plan is go get some synths and some serious electronic equipment, a decent mic and a few instruments, an electric piano etc, to make some samples.. Just that something on the PC would be a bit of fun now and cost nothing because I'd probably yar-har-diddly-dee it..
Have you ever considered an MPC?
Quote from jibber :Have you ever considered an MPC?

Yes!! Along with one of those, if money was no object I'd have some instruments and some electronic stuff, all hooked up..

How much are these MPC's on their own? And I'm guessing they hook up to your PC or something? I'm a newb about it but I'm uber keen!
They are not cheap.

There's different brands, different models, etc. So first of all, you'll have to decide what exactly you want (how should you know? i know... hehe).

I got an MPC500 from Akai. It's the smallest model available from them, but still costs about 450-500 Euro over here. The next bigger model is the MPC1000 which is around 800-900 Euro. Then comes the MPC2500... etc.
If i had to make the choice again, i'd save up a little more and go for the 1000 at least. Not that the MPC500 wouldn't be good... but compared to its bigger brothers, it has a very small display (you have to do a lot of things by ear on the 500, like trimming samples for example).

You can connect them to almost anything.
They have MIDI ports (in/out) aswell as Stereo-Jack in- and outputs (L/R). There's a phones output too.

To load samples from your computer, you connect it with an USB cable (only for data transfer). Then you can assign the different samples to the pads of the MPC and play with them.

What you play with the pads can then be recorded into sequences, which contain various tracks (beat, instruments, etc). Later on you can arrange your sequences into a complete song.
Example: Sequence 01 is your intro, Sequence 02 the verse, Sequence 03 the hook, etc.

You can connect a keyboard, a turntable, your ipod, a microphone, basically anything with an audio output... and record it with the MPC, then cut the samples, and use them.

The list of what you can do with an MPC is long. And the list of what you can do with a computer and software is even longer. The question is what do you prefer?

I've tried a few programs for sampling and making beats, but i just can't do it on a computer... it ruins the fun for me. That's why i took the hardware route. I have the MPC, a digital piano, a few guitars and an e-bass. I enjoy playing/using all those instruments and the MPC very much. The computer i only use to record. It's the right way for me, but not for everybody.

One thing is for sure tho... buying hardware and instruments is expensive! I could have bought a decent small car for the money i've spent over the years. It's a good thing to try out software first (because you can do that for free pretty much). Otherwise you'll be buying stuff, and then find out you'd actually have preferred to do it with your computer. This goes mainly for sampling, if you want to play an instrument, no computer will ever beat a real guitar, piano, whatever.

It's a big topic, so i'll stop here.
But feel free to ask more if you would like to know something in particular (i'm no expert, but have collected some experience over the last few years).
eJay does not have a sequencer. Its just a timebar where u can drop clips on and be cool. Lmao. There are alot of programs like this, older ones have midi only and stuff.
ComposeWorld?
Thanks Jibber for the explanation.. it seems like it'll be expensive but hey, that's what moneys there for.. to spend.

I'd probably go down the 2nd hand route as that would likely be cheaper, going to music stores to buy a few instruments, and somewhere I think we have an old electric piano, so apart from the MPC, I'd only have to buy a couple of things.
madtrackers. i think it was named that, its not that easy but pretty easy to use. i made some music on it some time ago

When I was younger I used to play around with these programs. Earlier eJays were very simple, but the more recent ones had synthesizers and beat machines and all I think...

The program you were originally think of is ComposeWorld if I remember correctly. I have used it and it is VERY easy to use!
i am thinking it was dance ejay ( i have 6), they are not very expensive and once they were given away with cereal!

mario composer was awesome :P

The one given away with cereal was only the demo.

Jamie, try FL Studio (Fruity Loops) It's suppose to be good.

I am pretty sure the program was ComposeWorld. It isn't really very good at all though. It is the only one I could think of that does what you say .
if you're planning on making music by looping samples, use sony vegas. it has a very good sound editer.
the ejay collection is good if you aren't expecting masterpieces. it has loads of samples and loops. you can even buy extra sample packs (carl cox pack is v good)
fruity loops is a different ball game. i would recomend buying a midi kb if you go down the FL route.
