And about the skin:
Try stretching the skin-file to 1024 by 1024 before you edit it for raised quality. Also use minimal compression so the colors look better.
If you're using paintbrush for this you won't know what I mean. You should try to get your hands on a better editing program like Photoshop or GIMP.
