The S2000 is an obvious choice, 2.0 or 2.2 it has a great engine, one of the best driving positions for a sports car (right after the elise imo), and it is deemed to be a classic.

handling-wise I'd actually prefer the old mx5 because it has lower limits, and it gets out of shape more often, which means you will be getting more involved even when you are not on track, but that's just personal reference.

You might look at some modern classics (944 is a good one, maybe a first gen boxster or even...capris?) but unfortunately most of them do show their age, or they are very pricey.

Quote from GrIp DrIvEr : I rode in one with a brother that can drive like a race car driver.

Wow, so your brother put the left foot on the clutch, right foot on the brake and gas pedal, just like a racing driver!

AMAZING
Ok, so i've driven an S2000 yesterday!

I liked it very much. The feeling you get when sitting in that car is pretty much what i've been looking for. Feels pretty similar to the MX-5 (simple, everything in its place, no unneeded gimmicks, made to drive... the S2000 feels even better in this regard), but with a more powerful engine. Handling is nice too, just like i've expected it... like a big go-kart.

Speaking of the engine...
I was expecting a little more i guess. You can feel when you hit 6k rpm and VTAK kicks in yo! ...but it's not like "OMG lightspeed!" to be honest. It's just that there isn't much that can impress me after my 944 turbo, which had 400NM torque at 4k rpm. Don't get me wrong however, the S2000 doesn't feel slow at all. And i better don't start talking about the engine sound...

I think i'm hooked.
Good to hear Jibber. Whether you decided to go for an MX5 or S2000, you cant go wrong. You will enjoy both.

As for the S2000's power, sure it does'nt throw you back in your seat but it just keeps on going, and going, and going. Before you know it, your doing well over what the law says you can! I know it sounds silly, but the power delivery is sort of like a big automatic. Very smooth and subtle, but it just does'nt stop gaining speed.

Im sure you know what i mean after driving one.
Yes i know exactly what you mean.

It's on the other hand, something that worries me a little... This car is going to cost me my drivers license.
Something really different: Suzuki Cappuccino. Think of an MX5, but 15% smaller, with a turbocharged 650cc engine. Too bad the steering wheel is on the wrong side ( :hbomb: ) and their age is showing up.
Cappucino? O_O''

@ Jibber. Haha
Im sure you would be fine. Just wait until you get to a nice bit of country road, then have some fun!
Not too easily done in Switzerland, is it? I thought the cops chops your fingers off if you get caught speeding once? I was going to to go to Interlaken later this year in my MG, and was reading advice about driving in Schweiz. It's not a place for a pedal heavy racer

Re, the S2000 - you say it's not that quick, but sure as hell it's quicker than the Mx5. Does the Mx5 handle better on corners? I think it does. That for me, would be the decider.
Switzerland is not exactly a nightmare when it comes to going over the speed limit, but if you don't pay attention or are unlucky, it can quickly cost your license (and a lot of money). It's quite possible to quickly find a country road where you can be more or less on the safe side regarding speeding cameras (where you can simply tell that there are none, since you would see them if there would be any).

The problem is if you don't pay attention to your speedo for a few seconds, and you do it somewhere where there is a camera. If you get caught doing more than 105km/h in an 80km/h zone for example... say goodbye to your license (not that i constantly drive too fast, but let's say you use the full 2nd gear when comming from a 50km/h into an 80km/h zone... before you know it, you are already past the speed limit).

As for the comparison of MX-5 and S2000...

I've had an MX-5 for about three years (NB model). They are very good cars with great cornering abilities (you'll keep up with almost anything on the road if it's slow and twisty corners). Aswell, 140hp is already good enough for a car that weights barely over a tonne.

The S2000 feels very similar, but nevertheless, you can feel the additional weight (which didn't feel like something negative to me, it still felt great to drive, very light, and pretty "go-kart like"). I can imagine the MX-5 will be faster in some tight corners, but it might aswell be the other way around. Judging from how they feel, they are about equal i'd say.

So far so good, but where the S2000 wins for me is:

- It has way better seats.
The MX-5 was almost perfect, but in the rare moments when i felt "disconnected" from the car, it was always because of the seats not giving me perfect support (i'm quite slim). In the S2000, the seats are almost as good as in the 944 i had (best seats ever)... in other words, they are very good seats.

- Interior design/styling.
The MX-5 was already very nice, but the S2000 wins again here. I rarely felt like "everything fits perfectly and is in the right place" like i did in the S2000. I love it when the interior of a car feels simple and designed to drive, and the S2000 is a perfect example of how it should be done.

- Engine.
The MX-5 has a very reliable engine with enough power to be fun, but it also feels a little rough and sounds about as exciting as a vacuum cleaner. The S2000 on the other hand... i think Jeremy Clarkson said it best: "an astonishing engine!".

- Looks.
I always liked the design of miatas, but again the S2000 clearly wins here... it's simply a very nice looking car!

As i said, i think i'm hooked...

I gotta ask - whats wrong with the 944?

Doubt it, probably no clutch there to put the left foot...

If you ever had the late turbo model, you don't want anything else anymore (with a chip, 290-300hp and 400NM torque). And they are getting rare, which means way overpriced. The interesting turbo model was produced from 1990 to 1991 if i'm not mistaken, so there aren't that many... and people who have a good one usually keep it, or sell it for a ridiculous price.

On top of that, many of the cars have been tuned... from people who didn't know what they were doing.

At some point, the 944 was an affordable car even for young people. The thing is, maintenance was still on a porsche level, so they drove the car until something big would have had to be fixed (new clutch, timing belt and water pump, etc), and then they sold it.

Many of those cars have "maintenance holes" which will cost you a lot of money to get them to a "good maintained" level again. And even if it's one that's in good shape, it's still an car that is soon 20 years old.

On a sportscar, you wan't the important parts to be in very good condition (suspension, drivetrain). And on a car nearly 20 years old, you will have to replace some of those things eventually. As an example... to change a clutch on a 944 turbo, you have to take out the rear axle (they are built quite complex). Material plus work will sum up at around 2000 Euro. And that's just a clutch.

I don't want all that. I want a car that is relatively modern (meaning it will be good for another few years, without having to replace major stuff like suspension parts/bushings etc.), and reliable. I love cars, but i don't like worrying about them.

I had a 944 turbo which was in perfect condition (and lost it because some idiot driver didn't look and felt like pulling out of a sidestreet right in front of me (couldn't avoid him anymore, car was totaled)). People from the scene, when they've seen the car, told me: "be very careful with this car, you won't ever find another one in such good condition!". And trust me, they were right.
I've payed roughly 10'000 Euro for the car. If you find one in the same condition today, it will be somewhere around 20'000 or 25'000 Euro.

Sorry to hear about the 944. If i remember rightly, you posted a pic of it, and it had a Momo steering wheel?

Lets say a really tidy 944 turbo one came up within your budget, would you buy it? Taking all your other points into consideration, surely it must be abit boring getting into the same car again, as you already know what to expect and "know" how the car behaves....am i wrong?
It's possible that i've posted a pic of it long time ago. I actually had two...
The first one in great condition, and then after the crash, i bought a second one, which was in a normal used car condition (which was the reason i sold it again, it just wasn't the same anymore). If you're interested, i'll post some pics later on... still have them. And yes, it had a momo steering wheel (both).

If i would find one in the same condition as the first one, for the same price i've payed, it would be pretty hard to say no... very hard!

Until today, it was without a doubt, the best car i've ever driven (and i'm not even a Porsche fan)! And i've driven a few fun cars in my life, including a twin turbo RX-7 in great condition, BMW M Coupé, Ferrari 360 modena, etc. The 944 was the best of all of them.

Then again, as i've said... those cars are nearly 20 years old, and they need more attention than a "new" car. And i guess i've just become old and lazy.
Ya, i can understand the feeling with older cars. I personally prefer older cars, as i hate all the plastic and electronics which are poured onto modern cars now, but the S2000 is an exception. Such a lovely car.

As for your 944, sure i would love to see some pics!
I think you might have been the guy, that said you were driving along, some guy pulled out and you tryed to avoid. You then landed the car on a rock or something i think?
That's what i mean. Most modern cars are packed with all kind of BS you don't really need.

You have a good memory by the way!
It was a "landmark" stone in the field at the side of the road, which ruined the whole bottom side of the car. I'll post a few pics soon...
Hehe. I've always been told i got a goldfish memory...*bum dum tish*
Looking forward to the pics.

I get a lot of crap here. Anyway, do you prefer an S2000 more than a MX-5, or are you still wanting an MX-5? Or, do you now want that S2000 more than ever?

Interesting cars to buy?
