What's right with them?
Damn you jamie!

Well, they're fairly quick, good on fuel, look fairly good (imo) parts are easy to get hold of (british made) and are comfy to drive.

Just be sure to find one that has already had the head gasket done as its can be an issue with them, and they are a little fecker when they do go.
HGF

LoL! Beat me to it, on any K-Series the head gasket will eventually go.
I did mine, well, blew it after about 2 months of owning it, turned out the waterpump was leaking, which then let water out and air in, pressurising the system then it was bye bye HG!

Had it rebuilt about 6k ago, fixed the WP leak and its all good now!
Quote from S14 DRIFT :What about an Original mini, I'd imagine they wouldn't be very expensive to insure and as long as you keep it rust free it'd be worth something when you went to trade it in..

Unfortunately Minis are expensive to both purchase and insure because they're so popular (and crashed lots by young drivers). Getting parts (including modified parts) is very easy and affordable though and you're right it'll be worth pretty much the same in a years time.

Quote :
You'd also learn more about car control in 3 months in a mini that you would in 2 years in another car. Fit some "phat" wheels and some strips and away you go!

Very true but a more unlikely classic will cost less to purchase and be a lot less to insure as a young driver, I was tempted by a Austin A35 or Wosley 1500 before I bought my tank. The problem you'll find with insurance is that the run of the mill companies won't insure anything pre-mid eighties and classic/specialist insurance isn't interested in making a realistic quote until you've got a years NCB (which I understand entirely).

Quote from sam93 :I don't think you can get classic insurance until you are 21, so no lol.

You can but at a large extra cost, at 19 and with a years NCB it is now quite realistic for me to get specialist insurance.

Quote :
I was thinking of an original mini, the thing that put me off getting one is motorway driving. I wouldn't mind getting one that needs a respray so it would be cheap. Get is resprayed, strip it out and put a multipoint roll cage in lol and also to add a few more tuning parts to the engine.

I've had quotes for both the Lada and a 1.4 hatchback modified for competition use up to full stage rally spec in the region of £500-600 with 10,000 road miles, road event cover and 2 extra young named drivers. Richard Egger was the best, I spoke to him in person at Race Retro, very realistic and unlike Tesco was very keen to get rollcages/proper safety equipment into road rally cars the only thing they don't like is engine modifications and obviously will tell you to f*** off if you want neons, bodykits and subs.
Why is Tesco value insurance £500 cheaper? says im comprehensive on both normal and value
Really I am going to have to find a car that is about £1500 a year to insure and the car to cost about £1,250. Only thing is, I don't want anything like a Kia, Rover etc.

I best start hunting lol. Only thing is, the cars that keep springing to mind are hatchbacks like Corsa,Saxo,Clio,106.
1.4 fiesta zetec was £1400 with tesco value
Quote from pearcy_2k7 :1.4 fiesta zetec was £1400 with tesco value

With a few subtle mods, Fiesta's can look nice. The new 3 door Fiesta Sport in white is nice though.

Didn't think of a Fiesta.

Pearcy, what year fiesta though - 2001+
Well all i was planning to do was make it look like an ST or Zetec S, thats it, all factory stuff

And yeah 2001+ Thinking more like 2006 because i like the lights Most cars are dirt cheap for me so i could probably get a 2006 for 2002 money. My dad had the exact car i wanted bar the wheels but he sold it

You aren't going to be able to mod your car (my friends insurance company won't even let him debadge it) or have a nice car at 17.

My recomendation would either be an Astra or a a Volvo 460.

I'm seriously thinking about getting a astra. If I was to get the CDTI version, the tax will only be £120 for 12months, so I'll save money on tax.

forget the tax - the most you'll pay on a first car is £210 (i should know ), and £90 saving isn't that great compared to what the insurance will cost.

True I suppose.
If you get something pre-2001 tax will only be £120 or £180 depending on the capacity.
Quote from ajp71 :Utter bollocks... I took my test in a 2 litre car.

Insurance companies also always ask what type of license you have when you take out insurance...

im on a open policy on a v10 beemer, got lifted once, nearly twice.

all they asked me was my age and do i have a license

thats how it goes.

besides why do you OP need a car ?? - unless its helping you in your pursuit of millions, its just an expensive accessory

Presumably you're talking about a business multi-car insurance policy? Whether that policy chooses to insure you has no relation to what you can legally insure and drive at any age.
Thanks for the comment about my mondeo sam. Try not to get so easily offended about your mates VAN.

Anywho, i personally think your better off saving all the money you can until you are closer to being 17. You said your not going to be 17 until february, and in that time, insurance prices are most likely gonna go up so its kinda pointless doing "realistic" quotes. If you do want to still get quotes though, look at cars that have a lot of enthusiasts. If you was able to get insurance with an enthusiast's club, the insurance would most likely come back a little cheaper than most run of the mill companys as they know your an enthusiast and that you love your car, so you would be less likely to be wreckless and wrap it round a tree.

Why does anyone need a car? It's for transport duh. lol.

Quote from Nathan_French_14 :Thanks for the comment about my mondeo sam. Try not to get so easily offended about your mates VAN.

I don't get offended, just thought how could you say something bad about any modified car when you own a modified Mondeo lol.
Quote from sam93 :Why does anyone need a car? It's for transport duh. lol.

Why does anyone need a car? Because when one person lives near enough to public transportation, he automatically assumes that everyone lives near enough to public transportation.

I don't need a car myself, I could just walk the 29 miles to the bus station. Then again, it would be easier to walk the shorter 20 miles to work than walk past work to catch the bus...
If you had a car, or in my case a bike, and you lose it and have to use public transport, you'll find it incredibly annoying, time wasting, annoying, annoying and depressing. And in my case the £15 for 180 miles which will cover up to... well it's 10 miles to work and back.. so 18 times is damn cheaper than £3.20 x 18 for the train!
Well, if you put it that way you have to count all the other things you pay for, like insurance, tax and the maintenance of your car/bike.

Also, if you were traveling by train to work everyday you wouldn't just pay the 3.20 everytime you got there, you would buy a monthly ticket or soemthing....
Public transport is annoying, I had to put up with it until I got my bike which was in February. I once had to get the bus for a couple of days when my CDI blew, was bloody annoying.

Ford SportKa , you gonna get a lot of fun in it .

+1 - Might be branded as a girls car, but damn that thing is nippy

And with Public transport, it costs me £3 a day and 2 bus journeys to get to college, which is an inconvenience tbh, which is why I prefer a car, and £3 in a fuel tank is gonna go further and stop when you want it to
