Right we both have Duel core. My laptop now is running at 60 degrees and about 50 on idle. I shall suck all the dust out, makes it blow almost cold air out then.. But we have both had out laptops for the same amount of time and I have cleaned mine out about 6 times in 2 years he has cleaned his out.. none.

He is on high full settings I am on all low.
Still only getting 20 frames with it all on Low graphics and Laptop dust free.
could be alot of things m8, wot anti virus solution do u use? wot other processes are running, do other games work ok? does the laptop in general perform ok.

reinstall lfs if you havent done so already.

try disabling startup items (google msconfig)

disable programs that arnt needed, temporary for testing , messenger, etc etc skype, etc, disable services that arnt required or for testing purposes

good luck
Considering that you have had the laptop for 2 years there might be a problem with your windows. Have you ever re-installed it? Not that it is really necessary to do but windows can get pretty scewed up after some time, especially when you install/uninstall lots of stuff frequently and browse the web with insufficient security.
Get some anti-malware tool like S&D and do scan. You have mentioned a virus, are you 100% sure that it is removed now? It is VERY likely to be the cause...

BTW what is your idle CPU usage? Open TaskManager (Start>Run>taskmgr), check the Processes tab and sort the running processes by their CPU usage (Click on the "CPU" row caption)

No LFS only uses 1 core IIRC, and no I think XP and vista are about the same when it comes to that.

While your in task manager have a look at the processes tab, how many?

Does it take ages to startup/shutdown? are there lots of little icons on your taksbar next to the clock?

Do you have plenty of free HDD space ?

SD.

it wasnt really a question :-) afaik it doesnt. not many games do, it was in reply to degats a few post b4 :-)

my own personal experience is that i lose upto 20fps using vista compared to xp, maybe driver related, but gaming under vista was slower, most things are, ive not tried for a while :-) maybe its all of a sudden better now??
Right, Im sure I removed the virus, I am running both AVG and Zonealarm. I reinstalled windows about a month ago. My CPU IDle speed is about 1-5%. I have 72 processes running which seems alot. I do want to stop some services. And I shall try and reinstall LFS to see if it works any better.

LFS doesn't directly benefit from multi-core as it isn't multi-threaded. However, performance should be better on a multicore (assuming each individual core is similar to a single core comparison) as background tasks can use other cores without affecting LFS (much).

AFAIK, there's no significant difference with DX performance between XP and Vista.
However, on lower spec systems (mine included - 3200+ Athlon XP) gaming performance on Vista is often better than XP as it is better at manageing and prioritising threads thus giving the game more CPU time to work with. The difference is most obvious on CPU intensive games of course, such as LFS and TDU.

There are also differences between the graphics drivers for each OS, but your mileage will vary as far as that's concerned.
72 processes is something I have never seen, 35 is about average and it is easy to push it down a bit. Anyway, if any of these processes is slowing your PC down, here is how to check. Start>Run>msconfig. A window with some tabs will appear. On the first tab is a radio button called "Diagnostic boot" or something similar. Select it and reboot. Windows will start up with only the neccessary services running, so if LFS runs fine in diagnostic mode, you can start disabling proccesses one by one and hope you will eventually find the one which causes problems.

hardly... one of my machines is currently running 140 processes. and three of them have over 100 processes. it all depends on the cpu/memory use of those processes.
