Large harddrives/crappymotherboards/general help :D
Right, around 2ish years ago I bought the computer im using now and its doing me well, but the lack of harddrive space I have is begging to annoy me (80gb sata+40gb ide)

Now I got an email from ebuyer saying WE HAS OFFERS ON HARDDRIVES LAWL and I got interested.

Would this just be a "Plugin the power and the sata socket thingymadodoa into the motherboard format and it will work" or will there be something else Ill need to do with it been 1tb and my motherboard been pritty crappy (at least I assume so)

Details you may need to know:
XP SP3 32 bit
2GB Ram (all I know about it)
AMD64x2 4000+

If someone wants to tell me a simple way to get my motherboard details go for it since I havent realy needed them and all ive ever done involving it is install the nforce drivers.

Cheers, Jim.

Edit: Wrong forum :<
Just plug it in and it works. Sata doesn't suffer from the lba64 issues some old crappy IDE controllers had.

Just make sure you have a free sata power connector and a sata cable (and a free sata port on your motherboard, although i don't think a motherboard exists with just 1 sata port).
Yup, should be plug n play. I'd be surprised if a 2 year old motherboard didn't have SATA to be honest, but you should open it up to have a look. You'll probably need to get a SATA data cable with the HDD too, but you should be OK for a SATA power connection. Again, you'll have to take a look inside and see, every PC differs

Really nice price on the drive though, I'm tempted to swap out my ancient 500GB IDE for it now
Well I know it has Sata, im not as dense as I may make myself out to be :P, I just wasnt sure if it would be plug and play

Cheers for the help (Y)

...One more thing, would I have an advantage booting windows off this rather than my 80gb sata? (Im assuming the 40gb ide is like crapeldoda) or would it be better to store files on the 1tb and boot off the 80gb? cheers.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound patronising

It depends which is faster. If it was me though, I'd leave Windows on the smaller drive, and use the bigger one for storage. That way Windows can load what it needs faster, and you can perform your normal file operations faster, as both aren't "competing" for drive access. The difference is minimal, but that's just me
