Strip search of 13 y/o student: unconstitutional
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,25693590-401,00.html

Glad they sorted that one out. How the bleep does a school, charged with educating and nurturing young people, justify strip-searching someone for pain-relief pills?

I hope the people responsible for this shameful abuse of power get a good dose of power-relief pills.
13 year olds spend over 80% of their time complaining nobody treats them like grownups. Until they find out how protected they are in comparison.
Of course, it's an 8-1 decision - with the 1 being the one and only Clarence Thomas who supposedly has built up a reputation for wacky decisions.

Tristan, it was Neurofen. Not heroin. Not dope. Not anything illegal. Neurofen.
Maybe not, but adults get strip searched fairly regularly and nobody gives a crap. Maybe this should count as a rite of passage
A bit harsh for a 13 year IMO, Neurofen isn't even a prescription drug. On the other hand, she should've handed the tablets to them, but they probably would've carried out the search anyway.
I can't speak on all cases, but it isn't easy to hand over neurofen you don't have

Quote :The strip search was carried out in 2003, after one of Ms Redding's classmates had become sick after taking pain relief pills. Another girl said Ms Redding had given the pills to others.

After her backpack was searched, Ms Redding was taken into an office where she was told to strip down to her underwear. She was then told to pull out her bra and underwear in case she was hiding pills in them.

Nothing was found.

Those kids seriously need to experiment with more interesting drugs, it takes a few weeks of constant neurofen usage to get anything going and even then it's not what i'd call a buzz. If you're going to get stoned on weeks of pain killer abuse at least use a codeine based one.
Over the counter ibuprofen is useless in all respects. I needed to take about 6 of them to even have an effect on my neck. The prescription stuff is better, but it's still more anti-inflammatory than actual painkiller. I agree about codiene though. If I take too many Kapake (for my constant headaches) close together the vision can go a bit swimmy. I like my liver too much to risk taking a load of them deliberately

This case is a little OTT though. Surely they must need reasonable evidence to make you do that, or perhaps a past history. I can't imagine they'd be allowed to search you if someone just said "yeah, they're carrying".

Oh right, sorry, I misunderstood.

Bra?

Anyway, I agree the search was way OTT. A 13 year old?

+1
altrought, IMO they did the wrong thing. thay shouldve had some strong evidence about the drugs, or even search her on drug dog before stripping her
Drug dogs are almost certainly not trained to deal with things that are perfectly legal like nurofen. It's like training a fireams sensing dog to smell for waterpistols, a waste of everyone's time.
Well if its perfectly legal, which it is, then whats the need to search anyone for it in the first place??
Jacko had an overdose and...

You can still drown someone with a water-pistol if you try hard enough
