Quote from Pablo Donoso :All you need is comodo, it's free, antivirus, firewall, network traffic sniffer, and process manager all in one proggie. Having issues with an IP or Process you don't trust? no worries, you can terminate them, or terminate and block them from reconnecting / restarting. You won't need any other proggie for antivirus, or even a firewall, this does it all.

also, don't go saving files you don't trust, read user reviews, those help.

This the same AV that told you a link to a file on your own HDD which didn't even exist was dangerous?

The best antivirus is common sense - but with the power of modern PC's everyone can have Avast running in the background hidden away without even noticing...
Quote from MAD3.0LT :lol thats extreamly good advise but people allso need to rember its not just downloading things alot of websites have virus's built in even some of 4chan pages have virus's built in that auto download in ur web browser.

Even 4 chan?

You make it sound as if 4chan was one of the most trustworthy sites on the internet. Which I doubt is true.
4chan contains no viruses.
Quote from Shadowww :4chan contains no viruses.

As long as you arent daft enough to download any of the rapidshit files that people post a link to on there.
if you feel that you are not very experienced user, you should really look for very good antivirus software, check the latest comparsion charts and choose one for yourself...great antiviruses are kaspersky, nod, avira, mcafee... also you should use some antispyware software, the best what I've met so far is that one from microsoft (but i don't remember its name).

most of modern antivirus softwares provide decent firewall, like nod v4, or if you want you can use another firewall software. but the best firewall you can probably get is a hardware one - a router. but if your internet connection doesn't require to have a router, it's pointless to buy one just to use it as a firewall...than check for some firewall software like zone alarm or something...mind your actions using it or you might end blocking even connection to your dns and you won't connect to any website or anywhere else.
use windows update - keep your system up to date and use latest service packs. one should not shy for using automatic updates there's nothing wrong about it.
and use safe and latest versions of your web browser. you should really avoid using something older than IE8...or avoid using IE completely...
Chrome over here!
Quote from danthebangerboy :Chrome over here!

Chrome is full of spyware itself, Just check Wikipedia...

Try IRON, its Chrome without all the dodgy calling home and usage tracking crap....

No it's not. Just turn porn-mode (private browsing) mode on, and you'll be fine.

And collecting data about most visited pages is now spying? Who cares which porn sites you visit anyways

If a toolbar did this then it would be classed as spyware so why not a browser with the same features included?... Also the Google update program that is required to install Chrome always autoruns and calls home at boot time... More crap to slow a computer down...

Im not paranoid about my internet habbits but i do like my privacy and not having my usage history and statistics sent to Google or advert providing affiliates for targeted marketing and nanny nation records....

It does not, actually.

Run PlasticSniffer or IP-Tools and watch the packets sent to google owned 74.125.x.x servers, even without Chrome running there is regular calling home...

Several sites have similar things as this to say...

Quote:-
Conclusion? With its Chrome browser Google is actually monitoring your entire surfing behavior, not merely the searches you may conduct via their search engine feature... ....This shows nicely how each and every character, when entered, gets transmitted to Google...

From Wiki, Spyware page

… Software that secretly monitors the user’s behavior… Spyware programs can collect various types of personal information, such as Internet surfing habit, sites that have been visited…
It's not calling home, it's checking for updates.
Yes i know but do you really need another thing running in the background causing lag in LFS or other things, on top of an antivirus and windows update checks too?...

If you like the Chromium browser then why not get IRON? No spyware type shenanigans and no autorunning updaters that install and run without your permission... IRON is a Chromium browser and thats it.. No extra baggage or privacy concerns, What you see is what you get...
For me best works following combo:

Antivirus - NOD32
(the only annoying thing is that if you want to use it free you need to re-download and install it again every 30 days. Not much a issue for me though)

Firewall - Zone Alaram free version

Spyware/adware - Spybot Search&Destroy

This combo never let me down. Not any virus or anything like that which would ever made me problems.

Someone was smart in reply at start that its about being smart where you click. Not unfortunately always.Just an example.

I was searching with my girlfriend for a dog. We have been looking about the info only on official country club dog pages and one of the pages had virus. What a suprise. Logically nobody could expect something like this but it can happpen nowdays.

Ofcourse when someone is childish and need to watch porn all the time on web then its his stupidity.
1st, Iron is updated much less than Chromium
2nd, if 542Kb of RAM is a lot for you... sorry.

If resource usage is paramount - don't use Chrome, it eats CPU more than any other browser, so much so that it wasn't even really usable on my 600 MHz Celeron in my eee.

Firefox is also too bloated in RAM usage for the PC i'm working on atm - the only really lean browser I can recommend is K-Meleon.

I still use Chrome on my main PC though...
Quote from Shadowww :It's not calling home, it's checking for updates.

Mine doesn't do either, as i disabled the auto update service in services.msc, as i have done for anything else that uato updates whenever it wants, and especially windows update.

I just start the relevent service(s) every few days to manually check for updates, then turn them off again once its done.

There is nothing quite like something deciding to update itself in the middle of a race, hence why i disabled it all.
As far as the Chrome privacy policy says incognito mode still sends usage tracking info to sites but doesnt save any tracking cookies after Chrome is closed.... So its private for the content saved on the pc but still broadcasting your usage to the world...

Disabling update services and all the usage tracking seems strange considering Chrome is touted as being an efficient and secure browser...

Its not the resources that bother me, Its all the cloak and dagger sneaking about...
Who cares which porn sites do you visit? Nobody.

Thats precisely why i disabled it all, as how do we know what info is and is not being kept, stored, or even passed on to 3rd parties.
Sorry thats what i meant, you have to turn off crap in the services CP or msconfig to stop it randomly calling home and creating lag.... Some people would have noticed the service straight away but theres bound to be loads that havent... I wonder how many people have been kicked from Fox racing because of a crash due to a lag spike going into first corner...

Its all hastle to get the pc well behaved with respect to updaters and other crap that calls home and then Google add more rubbish to your system...

Shadowww, its nothing to do with browsing paranoia.. There is a huge industry in Anti-spyware/Adware systems to stop this type of thing going on... Then Google goes and adds dodgy features into Chrome? Just because its Google doesnt make it ok for them to always be looking over your shoulder.... The MyWebSearch toolbar was classed as spyware... With Chrome you dont need MyWebSearch to have the same dodgy features happen...
Its cool, we are agreeing!

This iron browser is beginning to look oh so tempting, thelook and feel of chrome, without all the bullsh!t.
