how do i get into a online server with a free demo?

Start LFS, choose Multiplayer, Click Display a list of hosts, join one of the hosts that comes up , and thats it i think.

You may need to Unlock your LFS first by putting your demo license details (username and GAMEpassword) in on the entry screen (bottom left option) but i can't remember if you need to or not.

it keeps saying password must be 8 characters

IIRC your password does have to be longer than 8 characters, so just go to lfsworld.net, log in and change your GAMEpassword to something longer than 8 characters.

don't set your game password and your net password for here the same one, in case you get hacked like I did a while back, thank god I didnt have LFS yet.

Yeah, pablo is correct, make sure you use different passwords for GAME and WEB passwords.
