This is happening on a couple of FLV videos that i downloaded.

One video shows as 4 seconds in length according to the timer in media player classic, but once it reaches 0:04 the timer stops there and it continues to play the rest of the video which is just under 3 minutes long in total.

The other video shows up as 04:53 according to the timer but again, is in fact about an hour long, so it reaches the end of the timer and continues to play until the end.

It's not exactly a major problem as such, but annoying if i want to get to a bit half way into the hour long vid, because i can obviously only drag it along to 04:53 and then wait for it to reach the bit i want to see and hear.

I have tried watching them in regular windows media player but i get sound and no video, plus the timer still does the same thing, showing alot shorter than it actually is.

Anyone know what causes this and how to fix it, preferably without re-encoding into a different format, as when i have done that in the past i end up with a really blocky video that is bad quality.

try VLC player, might work then

FLV sucks as a format to play. I don't know of any media player that can play them properly. They either become non-seekable or just outright don't work.

Yeah, FLV is a bit of a nightmare to work with.

I tried re-encoding the bigger video (200mb) into wmv format and it did it in about 2 seconds but shows the file size as 0 bytes which obviously doesn't play, and when i tried encoding into mp4 it just failed giving some random sampling error.

VLC does the same thing, but shows the vid as 02:37 instead!
