Heh, we had a couple come into the shop a few days ago bragging about how they get free WiFi because they steal it from people who forgot/don't know how to secure their router. I really wanted to slap them upside the head, but I'm not sure the manager would have been happy.

Thats basically what it is.

the 50Meg modems have 4 nodes they can connect to. the modems supplied for the 20meg and below only have the capability to connect to a single node.

They are supposed to connect to Node 1 only. but during busy times it tries to seek out nodes 2 - 3 - 4... and fails misserably.

At least that is how i understand it.

of course on top of this they are overloading certain areas without "unlocking" the total available bandwidth rates for the area(s)
my neighbour has an unsecure router. When we were trying to set up an access point it kept picking up their netgear router.

I still have my Surfboard SB4100 modem (Motorolla IIRC). Downloaded some stuff from Adobe's site the other day at an average of 1.54MB/s. I don't think the modem is a problem

I've always thought that when VM's connection is good, it's very good.. anything else however... services, "tech support" (hahahah) is purely a joke.

i get the same issues in NI. but i would only disconnect from Teamspeak for about 30seconds and auto reconnect. once around 5pm-7pm and again at 10:30pm-12am. i would only disco once in each time slot. tiz strange but doesn't affect my broadband.
i used to have one of those od NTL modems (grey effort). with that bad ass, i would lose ~95% bandwidth. new modem fixed that.

if you have to call their call centres, there a good chance an agent will use a generic "oh, you've come through to the wrong department". respond with "but i've just been passed to you from there".
this will speed up the call quite alot.
another tip: a call centre agent is trained to "take control of the call". this is done by asking questions. apparently, the person who asks the most questions is the person controlling the call. i love taking control when calling VM.
At the beginning of the call, (I usually just piss around with call centers phoning me) but when they say we'll have to ask you a few questions, just reply with 6 inches and see what kind of response you get.

Had a weird problem yesterday, was running 5mb line (fastest its been on the free "10mb" upgrade.) then my modem rebooted and went back down to 2meg and the upload speed is worse than before the upgrade!
I really do hate Virgin Media upload speed..... Its ridiculous....

I get that all the time, mum upgraded the line from 2meg to 10meg before they automatically introduced it.... its never gone over 4meg.... usually sits at 2.5meg, even on a good server
