Shame u dont want an import... You could get a v6 twin turbo Galant 300bhp with under 70k miles for £4k... Or if u are lucky, find one of the 200 official Uk cars...
300ZX you can get one for about 1.5K

Luke not recommending a Kia?

What has the world come to?
ford cougar anyone ?

or

morris morina (its an rwd... and its cheap... and top gear proved that its better for an ice race than a 300zx or a 944 )
Toyota Corolla AE86
Nissan 200SX S13/S14
Quote from danowat :I am on the lookout for a different car, I fancy a change, these are my tickboxes, anyone got any suggestions.

1) Must be a bit "different", not the same thing every other bugger has.
2) Preferably RWD, but I will considered FWD or 4WD.
3) Must have 4 seats.
4) Must be a UK car, no grey imports.
5) Ideally be fun to drive, but whilst still being reasonably practical.
6) Must be able to pick one up for under £4000.

Any suggestions?

MINI...a Clubman, a Cooper, a 1275 GT, or even an Estate. I'm talking about the old one of course.

1) It's different from the other uh...average cars every bugger has.
2) It's FWD, but you hopefully won't care.
3) It has 4 seats.
4) It's 100% british.
5) It doesn't seem much fun to drive, but Mr. Bean showed the UK the opposite.
6) There are a bunch of them under that price and in good condition, just get an issue of Mini Magazine, it has pages with Mini parts and in the last pages is the ads section (not making any publicity here).
Sorry,not read rule #4

My mistake.
Trouble with imports is they are horrendously expensive to insure.

2.5 GT single turbo Skyline - £1200
Celica GT-four - £200

Can also insure a 2.5V6 Alfa 156 for under £200.

Going to view a 156 this weekend
alrighty, this just suggested that this one is not an import
Quote :Ralliart VR4, UK car not Jap registered import

Hmmm.....was sure they never brought the Legnum out in the uk........
Quote from danowat :Hmmm.....was sure they never brought the Legnum out in the uk........

So was I. Further investigation says, that this might be true though

Quote :North America and Europe were again denied this model, but the burgeoning grey import trade meant that it developed a cult following in several overseas territories, especially the United Kingdom and New Zealand. In 2000 MMC's motorsport partner Ralliart was contracted to type-approve Galants and Lancers for UK sales, and 200 VR-4s were officially imported before production finally ceased two years later.

Volvo 850. Inline 5 engine, yummo!

HOTWHEELZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111!!!!!!111oneone
I'd be all about the RX8 option, although I really like the RX7 too. If you don't mind topping the oil up as much as the petrol

Nothing I can think of will be particuarly practical though. Fun and practicality seem to be mutually exclusive. And much as I recommend my car to anyone (and people who get rid always end up wanting another), it is dragged along by the front wheels.

How about something classic like an old Capri? I imagine any around now will be in good nick because they're owned by fans.

Toyota Starlet (pre-84). RWD and short wheelbase so would be fun. Or pretty much any econobox from the Eastern Bloc

That's not necessarily true. Not all insurance companies are equal and more specialist companies such as Adrian Flux will give competitive premiums for imported cars.

I've never had any problems getting insurance for my 'grey' import in almost six years of ownership.

Of course it depends hugely on the car you choose but you shouldn't rule out imports on that particular basis. They're often in far better condition than UK cars too
And in terms of Japanese cars, you often find a whole load of extra horses under the bonnet on an import too (there's about 40hp difference between the UK-spec v6 323 and the JDM one).
