New PC, what route should i go??
I need a new pc, this tired old P4 rig has gone as far as it can go, everything that can be upgraded has been upgraded as far as it can, it has reached the end of the road for gaming as it just dont cut it these days.

So, i need a new machine that can run LFS at a sensible fps at a decent resolution with decent AA/AF without bloody frame drops and is as fast as it can be in general on my budget, which will be around £500 roughly.

The way i see it is, i have three options, i either...

Buy the parts a few bits at a time month by month until i have everything i need to build it.

Or...

Save up the money and buy everything i need all together and build it.

Or...

Save up the money and buy a 'gaming rig' so i don't need to build anything.

You're thoughts please.
did you take a peek at the thread i made the other day?
I think missed that george, as i was at the LFS meet in wales at the weekend where i was racing karts and being drunk quite a lot, not at the same time obviously.

The only involvement i had on the forum over the weekend was watching franky500 and bob smith sat side by side and trying to ban eachother from the forum for a joke, which failed!
if you list your current set up we can see what we can use from it, in the new computer.

psu, case, dvd, hdd being the most probable candidates.

'cause with stuff from your older machine and 500quid, you can build a system around an i7.
all of the options are good...you can build a lot cheaper machine with your own time, and parts, and make it custom...you can finance it (or atleast in my country) if you buy, and get a system that WILL work

your call...but i am buying in the next couple days, a dell (dont know if it is in your country)

EDIT: or you can get alienware...it is very expensive but will stay fast, and strong and keep up for many years to come! (i built one on the dell desktop for 22,000 usd with everything)

I think the problem you may have if you spread it all out over time, by the time you get one part.. it could be like $20 cheaper or so when you get another part, and that will keep happening and happening and then you'll have serious buyers remorse at the end of the deal.

I say save it, wait until you can't stand the P4 machine, then buy it all at once.

Sorry for the slow reply, i totally forgot i made this thread

This is my PC, except it now has 2 of these, this graphics card, 1gb of ram, and is all built into this case

So despite the DVD drives and GFX cad being fairly new (under a year old) they are of the IDE and AGP variety, so seriously outdated, so i don't think there is much i could salvage from this PC unfortunately.
Save your money and buy all the pieces at once. Cause by the time you buy the 2nd piece, the price of the 1st piece (which you already bought) will drop. So it's not worth it to do it over time.

IDE drives are still very usable - I am using them atm and almost prefer them.

my dad has that case with the big blue glowing power button
I know that there is still plenty of IDE stuff around, but i always thought it was for people like me, so we can keep our older PC's alive.

Plus, with SATA being kind of the new standard, i would imagine there is a lack of up to date boards that can house a decent fast CPU and lots of RAM, but are IDE compatible, but this may not be correct.

My board(s) have IDE ports as I'd rather not give up SATA ports for a DVD writer when I seem to collect HDD's.
