A Theory of Moderation - Jeff Atwood (Stack Overflow Blog)

I wanted moderator views on how you like to do your job on here, and if you have different idealism then another mod.

Trouble is no one would ever get high enough reputation to have moderating powers, so there would be no moderators and the forum would descend into total anarchy.

And more seriously, the whole thing is based on trust, can we really trust such a large number of forum members to moderate fairly? Perhaps it would result in more bias in the forum's moderation, with people carrying out personal vendettas on eachother and so abusing their powers.

Why does this even matter? If the current system 'aint broke, don't fix it.

I got the impression the mods are separate from the users who gain abilites with rep.

Well I'm drunk, I generally try to do as little as possible but I think that's more because I'm lazy and would rather be doing other things. Franky500 is sat next to me and concurs.

how do you become a moderator?

You don't. You are chosen. And It has happened once since I have been here, Franky500, XCNuse and the_angry_angel. I believe that most of the other moderators all came from the old RSC Live for Speed forum.

Close but no cigar.

I believe the original moderators here (who moderated the once official LFS section at RSC) were:
* al heeley
* Fonnybone
* Gunn
* Janezki
* Scirocco

Later (19/08/06 to be precise), two further members were granted mod rights:
* Bob Smith
* SamH

Later still (24/04/07), another two:
* franky500
* XC Nuse

And most recently (15/02/08):
* the_angry_angel

The only name i remember seeing out of those 5 original mods is gunn, i don't think i have ever seen a post from the other 4, although i have been coming on here for about 18 months, which is a relatively short space of time compared to some.
