EuroBasket 2009 - Poland

2009 European Basketball Championship

Anyone into basketball around here? Me personally, cannot wait for the Euro games to start.

Qualifiers and groups:

Group A:
Croatia
Macedonia
Greece
Israel

----------------------------------------------
Group B:
Germany
Latvia
Russia
---

----------------------------------------------
Group C:
Great Britain
Serbia
Slovenia
Spain

----------------------------------------------
Group D:
Bulgaria
Lithuania
Poland
Turkey

----------------------------------------------

Some great teams promising some big games.

Teams in my opinion that will stand out

Greece
Spain
Lithuania
(Without Saras and other big players... Still, hopefully we can get somewhere)
Great Britain (Had a slow start in the qualifiers but got better)
Croatia (Well, they should do)

Although Russia are the current Euro Champs after beating Spain in 2007, they didn't look as good in Beijing, therefore I doubt they will make a breakthrough once again.
Poland and Latvia also look quite strong.

Hopefully Spain will drop their stupid acting and cheating and will play some proper basketball.....

The games start on the 7th of September, and will continue until the 20th.

Full schedule of all the games

I usually don't follow basketball (I like handball a bit more, tbh) but I always try to watch some of the matches in Euro or World Championships. Also because our commentator rules.

Looking at the 2 already known opponents I don't see Germany advancing, though.

Is Great Britain really good? I always thought they sucked at basketball.

Quote from zeugnimod :Is Great Britain really good? I always thought they sucked at basketball.

We suck at most things

And even if we don't suck at BBall, then I doubt we'll do well
GB suck at everything.

Just that they have some big names in their line up, so it does look promising. Very big chance of them playing us (Lithuania). Should be a stella match
Khem.

No Saras, No Siskauskas, No Kaukenas...

Yeaaaaahhh. Medals for 2011 please. Anyway, our group is pretty good for us, only Turkey can make trouble for Lithuania I think.
What a shi... game..... Barely won it against Latvia, freaking needed extra time and still nearly managed to loose it....

We still have a long way until we reach the game we played in Beijing.....

Good thing these are only preps at the moment....
So any thoughts on how badly GB will be slaughtered - especially bearing in mind no Luol Deng or Ben Gordon?
Well GB played Spain in a friendly prep match last night and lost. Quite badly actually.

Spain 84:63 Great Britain

Tonight a friendly against Lithuania

And we won over Slovenia last night.

Edit:

Lithuania 97:62 Great Britain

Slaughtered

Well the future doesnt look good for GB. No games won this summer yet.

Tomorrow the friendy tournament closing games.

Lithuania v Spain
GB v Slovenia
Lithuania is out of order this year... They can't find their game, they throw out ball to nowhere with 3 seconds to go... They can do a tackle in that frame of time, its usual thing in important matches. Now it feels like they had 30 point lead, and they didnt cared about the game, though we struggled with Slovenia a bit.

As a true fan, I still hope for medals, but if we all be realists - medals are barely possible for us.

Looking forward to LTU - ESP, it should be great match.
So, the first batch of games are done.

Biggest surprise was probably Lithuania, the favs to be on the podium, loosing first two games against Turkey and the hosts Poland.

Turkey came out strong and look very good heading into the next round.

The drop out's and teams going home:

Great Britain
Bulgaria
Latvia
Israel

Teams who took 1st in their groups.

Greece
France
Slovenia
Turkey

Quite few surprises there.

Saturday the championship will resume.
Germany barely made it.

I can't see them going any further without Nowitzki, though.
Yeah. Latvia won against them in the last match, just with not enough points to spare, so Germany still got through.
Tragic....

Lithuania torn into pieces by everyone..... (Except Bulgaria)

Absolute tragic championship.... Not even in the top 8 for the first time in some 8 years or so....

Terrible....
OK. Its all over.

Spain tore apart Serbs in the finals and took their first ever gold medal in European Championships.

Greece secured the Bronze.

Next up - World Champs 2010 in Turkey.

European Championship 2011, hosts, Lithuania.
