Quote from TiJay :Wow, I knew it was bad down there but I didn't know being mugged was a regular occurrence!

It isn't. The chances of being mugged are very low indeed, even in 'dodgy' areas.

Just because it happened to you or Oli doesn't make it likely. I spent quite a lot of my youth in London (Central and Greater), as well as in my twenties at Uni, and never found a problem, and didn't know many who did.

I think the odds remain very low. But that doesn't mean it never happens, or that they only pick on weedy looking people.

Quote from trebor901 :ipod touch for what it is i wouldnt say is worth the £260 its priced at. Plus unless you're gonna download hundreds of apps and use it all the time the 32gb version is just excessive.

Depends how much music you have. I've filled my entire 32GB Touch up and am now having to pick and choose what I have on it, rather than just putting everything on there.

if you met me you would not call me weedy. middle class maybe, but weedy definitely not

It's illegal. It is irrelevant if a Wireless network has "open" security. Unless you gain explicit consent of the owner of the network you are considered to be making unauthorised use of a private network, which is an offense under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. Plus if you use it to access the internet via the Wireless network, that is also an offence under the Communications Act 2003.

People have been arrested and prosecuted for it:

Like anyone cared.

@OP: I don't know, but the iPhone ain't that special anymore, if you listen to more than a couple of songs, I'd suggest getting the iPod touch, since it's the iPhone w/o cam and phone.

If it's a public open network, then yes you can just connect. If it's a private (either residential or commercial) network then using it is illegal.

Interesting comment, care to elaborate ?.

The reason i ask is, i've been thinking of getting an iphone recently, and although i've only had a ten min play with it in a shop, i have to say i was mightily impressed.

There are way more phones that can just about do that what the iPhone can, some things even better (Like the iPhone has a with 3MP a not-so-high res cam nowadays).
(I should've written IMO it's nothing special anymore)
It surely still has a big name, and it has it's own apps. But I think they all can be somehow converted to be compatible with other phones. (Java comes to mind).

That's what I meant. Sorry if that wasn't clear. However, the definition of "public" network is that the owners have given indication that it's use is "public". So the ownus would be on you to prove that you knew you had permision to access the network, e.g. there were signs or you asked the propriortor of the cafe etc.

Basically, the only point I'm making is to make sure you're allowed to use the network before you do, else you could end up in trouble.

Vaguely on topic. Apple have always been guilty of pricing their products at the top end of market. That's where they see their products positioned, as quality rather than value items.

I've been using Windows Mobile based phones for the last few years, and although they can be - sort of - made to function like an iphone, and - sort of - made to look like an iphone, and have similar-ish apps to an iphone, it's an absolute pain in the arse to get them to do it.

One of the main problems is WinMobile takes up too many resources just to run itself, then you have to asking it to run a dedicated Ui as well, then you're asking it to run all the apps and stuff you've installed. My phone's not too slow tbh, but that iphone i tried was so silky smooth, so fast, so intuitive, it was like night and day by comparison. And with the iphone the apps are so so much easier to find, (i would guess they're easier to configure to), and probably cheaper. The iphone camera's not great, but not too bad either (better than mine). And i would guess the mp3 files are much easier to install on the iphone than my current phone too.

The only thing that's putting me off is the cost, they're stupidly expensive over here. Another phone i was considering (the Samsung Omnia) is more than half the price of an iphone. And we can only get them on O2 contracts, which means there's no competition, so they can basically charge whatever they want. Rip-off UK, you bet

Anyway, i liked the iphone i tried, but time will if i take the plunge or not.
