The ninth race of the OWRL F1 2009 series took place at the Blackwood GP reversed course. While Wisniewski wanted to continue his successful run of the past races his opponents tried everything to keep the championship battle open. But as often, many plans have to be changed after the start.
During qualifying everything was straight forward when Adam Wisniewski took pole-position in front of Sascha Riegler and Nelson Marques. After a few infrictions regarding the line choice of some drivers the race got underway with Wisniewski starting on the inside and therefore storming away at the front while Riegler got under pressure by Marques. Both drove side by side into turn one with Marques coming out first. Riegler had to take care of Martin Silhanek who eased off early to avoid any contact right at the beginnging of the 90 laps. Pasi Juvani kept his sixth position for two turns before he went onto the grass and lost control of the car, behind him missed Ian Maslen his brakepoint completely and hit Sascha Zimmermann off the road but both could continue.
When James Dacre-Peace managed to avoid a spin in turn one with a drift, Wisniewski drove away from the field until he realized that he took the wrong tyres at the start. His early stop in lap five made it almost impossible to win this race and left Nelson Marques at the front, who got under pressure by Riegler who wasn’t amused after losing one position at the start. Pete Hopkins couldn’t keep up with the frontrunners because Carsten Hörenbaum was haunting him for fourth position. A small switching error just before turn one let him spin in that corner and made it possible for Hörenbaum to took over after making sure a doesn’t get caught by the spinning car. Zimmermann, who was last after his first lap incident, fought back and was up in 7th within nine laps when Riegler made his move on Marques during overlapping Stumm, remembering the Hakkinen move in Spa 2000.
Matin Silhanek was on a good pace and could close the gap to Marques on wnd position, but before he could attack the first round of pit stops has arrived. Marques and Riegler were the first to pit. The stop of Marques took six seconds longer because he decided to change the tyres on his first stop. Sihanek stopped one lap later without getting new tyres and got out in front of Marques on third. Hörenbaum was a lot heavier than his opponents, stayed out nine laps longer and also managed to rejoin in front of Marques on third. A small incident just before the second round of pitstops made it possible for Marques to regain third after he and Hörenbaum got stuck for a short time behind a lapped car. But Marques had to stop again with Silhanek and Hörenbaum moved up to second. When Riegler made his pit stop he was no opponent for Hörenbaum who was on his way to his second stop and therefore very light. He rejoinend just behind Marques on third, Silhanek was behind them and had bigger problems.
Silhanek lost control of his car in similar way to Juvani but two turns ahead and damaging his rear suspension. He continued on fourth and was visited by Hörenbaum afew laps later when the latter lost his car in turn one. But Silhanek kissed the wall one more time and soon he had trouble to keep the car on track. He fell back to 6th just in front of Zimmermann. Wisniewski and Hopkins finished fourth and fifth and in front of Zimmermann, who could keep both of them busy in their middle stints. But Sascha Riegler drove a constant race at the front and therefore earned his first win in front of Marques and Hörenbaum. The eighth place goes to Anton Moroz who scored the first points for himself and his team Starlite Racing. Sonicrealms Racing could reach the second place in the team championship in front of SpeedCore. In the drivers championship Wisniewski lost a bit but still has a 11-point advantage against Marques on second. Hörenbaum on third still has a theoretical chance.
The tenth race will be on the 26 September with a premiere. According to the Singapore GP the race will take place at the South City Reversed circuit under evening conditions.
