Hi. I'm currently half reading the gimp tut but rather than hijack the thread I was wondering if there are any proficient gimp users who can give some links to skins they have made using gimp so I can see the kind of potential it's up to. I hear it's as good as ps.

Theres plenty of skins made with GIMP, and i personally think its better and easier than PS.

GIMP is, indeed, capable of producing skins on the calibre of Photoshop. Just got to know how to use the program.

Well... I had a go and like most things that go with the saying... 'how hard can it be' it's not great. Infact you will probably laugh as I copied my greenpeace skin design for quickness.

But I thought i'd show it for kicks because I was able to use most of the normal ways of making skins in gimp. I've just got to work on the outcome.

The only thing I miss is being able to press shift to get your brush to go on a straight line but the paths tool is pretty cool.

Rome was not built in a day :P But at least it was fun for an hour or so.

I use GIMP to make my skins, and it is pretty powerful.
here are a few examples of mine I made for an event I participated in (with the same theme on each car), and the screenshots have an excessive amount of bloom. The skins are distorted in places, like the hood, as I did not feel like compensating for it, but it still looks good.

The ps one is obviousley better because I spent a lot longer on it but at the end of the day the results are still similair.

Good prog this gimp, getting quite used to it. just got to think of a good skin idea now. Plus it's nice to be able to have something with simialir power to ps but free (and not torrented or illegally copied)

Try not to just use the textures from GIMP, take a look at some other skins and see what techniques they are using.

Here's a picture, edited in GIMP, along with a skin made in GIMP.

Skin was a quick 10min job.

I've also uploaded my old HeX Racing skins.

Some of the BF1 2009 skins I made used gimp for final tweaks including using Shadow kits, resizing and contrast brightness tweaks. If you want to round off your freeware graphics software library, I'd recommend getting Inkscape as a replacement for Adobe Illustrator. It will cut down your time in lining up the design on the car. Then use Gimp to tweak.
