How about implenting a mirror that has a FOV of about 200°?

it even isn't unrealistic, just in reality hardly anyone would mount such a thing because turning your head is quite easy. pushing buttons to look left and right, on the other hand, is not - depending on where the buttons are. and most of all it isn't more realistic.
