I think quite a funny game ... too bad that at the beginning of the 2nd track i suddenly had -2 billion pounds
would be nice to see an updated version anytime

(for more information ask becky rose :tilt
Bleh, it's rubbish. I should know I wrote it.

I'm currently revising an old project which is linked in my sig, but for consistency (as I change my sig quite often) it's this: http://sailing.bansheestudios.com/

Still rubbish, but getting better. I'm no match for Scawen and Eric . If you fancy something other than cars for a bit though.

Mind you there's no player voting just yet so you need an admin to start a race, meaning there's not much point in a 24/7 server so there's little chance of finding a game, I might try to get that done soon - but practicing for the next league race is more important ! You can host a game (either by playing or with the dedicated host) by forwarding port 9999.
I get a 404 error when trying to download your sailing game, but it looks pretty cool. I'd like to give it a try

Same problem as 96 GTS

Try Version 5, and use the Live Updater to......erm....? improve it ?
So, Becky, did you code this in Blitz3D? I think I saw this project on the Blitz forums. Wish I could get the full thing.
I made a number of patches during today during which time the updater was down but all should now work.

>>did you code this in Blitz3D?
Yup. It's still my favorite language even though it's old. It's so much easier to work in than BMax.

Version 5's auto updater is now obsolete and will no longer work, the new one (released yesterday) supports compression. If anyone is still having trouble connecting it may be that your ISP cache servers has a version from this morning in the cache, in which case it should work tommorow.

I hope you enjoy it . There's little chance of finding an online game at the moment though as there's no 24/7 servers and not much point in making one without player voting to start a race (admin only atm). I will change that soon though so maybe in a week or two.
hmmm no wind speed/direction indicators ?
There isn't much of a hud at the moment, but you can tell from the sails .

I plan to make a user interface pretty soon, it will tie in with the console so you dont have to type commands.
kinda hard with the sail ... is doesnt seem to flap then the boat is facing directly to the wind
The sail does flap when heading into wind, have you let them out enough?
how would letting out the sail influence the flapping if the bow pints into the wind (or at least in the direction i assumed the wind was comming from)
If the sail is let out further than the optimum position it starts flapping, if it is too tight it bulges. Whilst this system isn't perfect, it's close enough. The optimum position when heading into the wind is zeroed, so if you let the sails out it flaps. It doesn't happen often because the player usually avoids pointing directly in to wind wherever possible as you go into irons and end up wherever the tide puts you.
well you need to turn through the wind for beating
The only problem with it is that the flapping animation isn't very good, the sail is drawn at the angle you set it and then the flap animation works on it from there, so when you are heading to wind with the sail fully out instead of flapping around in the direction of the wind it flaps about from the angle you've set it too.

Considering this only occurs when you're doing something very wrong, I didn't see the reason to add in an aweful lot of extra calculations. At the end of the day it's only a little game for fun and not the sailing equivellent of LFS, I havn't charged you £24 for it for a start. It's also a lot earlier in development than LFS is, so I might later include the wind over-riding the users sail angle at a later date, it just isn't a priority. It's like the AI in LFS - it only matters if you spend all your time not getting the most out of the game.
its just that as long as theres no wind indicator its pretty much the only way to tell the exact wind direction
I really dont know what you are referring too then as you tell from the sail, it acts differently if you are at, beyond or within the optimal position. It may not act perfectly within the laws of physics, but it does act.
is that letting the sail out and see in which direction it flaps is a nice and easy way to tell the wind direction

ans a weird behaviour that comes with the kind of sail controll you currently have is that if your straight against the wind you can push the sail out against the wind and it will flap
