the good thing with mirc, is that the only bad thing with not paying, is that it only takes more time to start up, but you can still use it. Just wait a few secs (10-15?), and then the continue button will appear. That will happend two times, then, you're good to go.

No need to pay, no need to use something else :P

actually you dont need an irc client , just your web browser can do that

I've used Trillian (both the old one and Astra) for all my IM's and irc. Seems to work.

Also Opera Internet browser has irc built in, plus it does all kinds of other stuff (like works as a media server, streams music, does email...) and is a whole lot better as an internet browser than IE, and miles less annoying than Firefox.
