Just bought LFS.
Ok, so I just bought an LFS license and plan to start racing soon. I much congratulate the developers on creating such a fantastically entertaining (demo) game. I love the realistic feel and there's a great sense of excitement when you finally get the hang of your car and truely start racing to overtake cars!

I have two questions:
  1. How often does LFS see a patch update?
  2. Do only S1, S2, S3, etc updates receive new content and features? Or are they classed as major version upgrades?
Thanks. Hope to see you on the track.

Hi, welcome to LFS

1. It varies. On the frontpage of liveforspeed.net you can see the release dates of previous patches.

2. S1,S2 and S3 are the big updates. The devs have defined a set of features for each stage (which only they know...if they know ), and a new "S" will only be released when those features have been implemented.
There are patches in between that have new content and/or features though. One of the most recent patches (patch T) introduced a new car, new track configs, graphical updates, physics updates, etc.

Hope this answers your questions
Quote from LeeLee :1. How often does LFS see a patch update?

I have been here since March of 2005. I started with the S1 demo 0.3H. Since then we've gotten:
S2 alpha 0.5L demo
S2 alpha 0.5P
S2 alpha 0.5P1 through 10
S2 alpha 0.5Q
S2 alpha 0.5S
S2 alpha 0.5T1 through 6
S2 alpha 0.5U - current patch

Did I miss any?
Hi and welcome!

LFS development is pretty unsteady, atleast regarding actual releases. Sometimes it's quiet for half a year, at other times we're flooded with updates, depending on what the devs are currently doing - small feature implementations like language compability usually result in a high patch frequency, fundamental changes like tyre physics revisions result in a more quiet phase. Actually there are three types of releases you see in LFS:
  1. A Stage release, the next being probably the last, namely S3. These releases are milestones in the LFS development and usually contain pretty huge changes. I expect S3 to be released somewhere in the next 2-3 years. From what Scawen stated we know that S3 will mainly contain graphics updates, so the main features should come with S2 final (the current release is still dubbed 'alpha', as you surely know).
    .
  2. Main / Incompatible patches. These do happen multiple times between stage releases and are incompatible to each other, meaning the LFS users are forced to update if they still want to play LFS on the current servers. The latest patch with updated tyre physics and the addition of the BF1 is an example of such a patch. The devs try to keep such mandatory updates to a minimum to prevent confusion and frustration, so don't expect them too often. I guess there will be a few of those patches before we go S2 final.
    .
  3. Test patches. These patches are really just for testing a new feature and are always compatible with the latest main patch. At peak times, you might even get multiple test patches per day.
So long, have fun. You're allowed to report back as soon as you have mastered all the 850+ track/car combinations

welcome to lfs m8's
AndroidXP: Thank you for the extensive reply.
mrodgers: I first heard about LFS in S1 stages, but didn't think much of it. I came back and decided to try it out, a lot has changed.

Thanks for everyone welcoming me. I've already made use of the high res textures and unofficial mods!
Welcome!

Oh yeah and I bought LFS after 60 minutes on the demo... and man I don't regret it! Except I have exams on at the minute, and it's kidna distracting. Well, I say kind of... it's extremely distracting!

That all makes sense after a few days racing lol

After exactly my first month in S2 i can only agree to this... lol
1. Check the site for info on that
.

2. s1/2/3 are only the big releases, with a lot of content that the devs keep secret until we're all rioting on the sites. The patches are just moderate fixes in S1/2/3 and have a new car and/or track.

ready to drop your social life outside of the net??

Just bought LFS.
