so i shouldnt use the + - shifter? any ways im thinking of buying an 86 they come cheap around here and there are many....well not that many around 4,000-12,000(higher prices are ussally modded)
Unless you are a qualified DIY mechanic, never buy a "modified" car.

You can use but you will soon realise its just pointless if its anything like most auto gearboxes

+1 on never buy a modded car. If it has been modded as most modded cars will have been through a harsh life. Better to buy a stock state car as it will be more reliable and mod if you must.
i just found out that the 86's i have been watching are all in california i live in newtorkthere like 2,500 miles away!!!!!!

ps:im thinking about a miata/240sx
There's really no point in manually shifting in an automatic the good thing about them is that you can sit back and the gearbox may as well cease to exist, which is good if you want to be completely devoid of any driving experience and hope your computer can keep you from crashing seeing as you sure as hell don't stand a chance.

If, however, you want to be involved in the driving experience I'd strongly recommend a manual.

Quote from Woz :Also remember most autos with an up/down shifter are the WRONG WAY AROUND. They have up and up shift and down as down shift.

So if you are used to the correct way up up for down shift and down for up shift then you do run the risk or over revving.

Even better though is the muppet I know who shifted down a gear by accident the first time he drove a sequential race car because he was used to his slushmatic road car and then to compound matters he panicked and changed gear again sending bits of engine flying everywhere, the engine had 14000rpm on the tell tale (and it was a 5 litre V8 ).

Yep. Manual is the way to go. I would also say get an older car without the electronic shite if you really want to play with a car. My old Mini was so responsive to movements of the right foot and that gave you very delicate control over the cars balance.

Most modern cars appear to damp the throttle so when you lift off you don't have that exact control over the balance of the car.

eeek, very costly mistake
I want to modify my saturn so that there are paddle shifters. I'll just wire the line pressure control solenoid so that it stays open constantly. Then it'll shift pretty firm!
Ahh that's too complicated. What I would do is take off the steering wheel and replace it with my MOMO, and just hope it works. Granted, it would be limited to 240 degrees of steering.
I saw a mod on the internet for automatic saturns where they just attatched a knob to adjust the line pressure. They just turned it down while they were cruising and then all the way up when they were racing.
Quote from Lateralus :Who is this General Public and why does he have so much say-so over things like this? What sort of crazy system would promote such a muppet to general in the first place?

Usually women divers that do stupid things in cars, or 16 year old kids driving his dads truck into the moat because he was showboating(actually happened at my school when I was in high school).

In general, the ones who ruin the insurance rates for being born.

Really, I have known people (more than 3) who have got themselves into a car accident within less than a week of getting their license.

I drive like a maniac on the street, and have not gotten into one accident, how hard is it? Those people are ruining my insurance rates!!!!!
Quote from Woz :Its because for the general public it "makes sense" in that you push up for up a gear. Does not matter that you have to fight gravity each change

In the end it does not matter. Most of the auto boxes they are connected to are so full of slush you would be hard pressed to even know it had changed gear lol

lol the slushy gear part was funny but not true if you buy a real American car
we have a 96 impala with the 5.7L lt1 and 14,000
(yes its going to be babied its whole life ) with a hyper tech programmer you can make the automatic lay about 5 feet of rubber down when it shifts in to 2nt gear at 55mph Woodward dream cruise at 1am or so after the cops left

also my daily driver (01 blazer extreme) had a 4 speed with a floor shifter with 1,2,3,[D]. you can drive it just like a stick and it drives faster. let me explain
you pull up to a light in 3ed gear. light turns green hit the gas as the rpm hits about 2500 pull the stick down to 2nt gear and it will go to 2nt(more about this at the end of post) you then once you get over 30 mph it wont down shift so you can be floored. and when you want it to go to 3ed gear and drive you simply push up on the shifter and it falls in to 3ed

the 2nt gear part. after driving the truck for a few months i relised that if you put it in 2nt gear the torque converter slips and it will leave the line in 2nt so when you take off in 3ed it leaves in 1st gear and once you pull it in to 2nt it makes the trany go in to 2nt gear

ps. IT IS A TON OF FUN TO DRIVE you can drive away from the fool that leaves the light floored and goes to red line in 1st gear every time shhh!
The 4L60E isn't strong enough to handle all of that. If you increase the line pressure to that point on a stock 4L60E, then I think you'll brake it very easily. If you were going to drag-race a RWD, modified V8 vehicle, then your best bet would be a 700R4 transmission with a manual valve body.
Rediscovered this topic whilst searching for another one. When I was away camping I was taking advantage of the manual override functionality of my auto box a lot. Going down hills it's got to be better to shift down a gear manually than to ride the brakes for long periods. That's a good reason to use the override.
he's talking crap. why would a car maker put a sequential shift option on the gearbox if it messes it up. sort of ruins the point in it.

Holy epic thread bump! and yeah manually shifting an auto will destroy it eventually (wears the bands out iirc, and it begins to slip)

I had one that did this, because i was paddling it everywhere. I hated that car haha
