Quote from Ger Roady :"Moaners Heaven" but there was a bar in Tijuana that has the right of this name ,so Lfs was the second choice.

Awesome, I lol'd at that.

This question has also been on my mind a lot. It's a great simulation and it doesn't deserve any relation to NFS, in my opinion.
A lot of my RL friends are always pronouncing it as "Life" for Speed, but I guess it's at least better than Need for Speed.
Actually Need For Speed is a great name IMO, but i dont say that loud!

Ivé had thoughts about the name aswell... why choose a name so closely confused with NFS?

The word "LIVE" can also be used to describe online gaming. Indicating that the games focus mainly on online playing.

Or just "Live for" as in dedicated to.

Or maybe both at the same time!

so maybe "Online for speed" or just "live for speed"

Hmm now i just realise how f*cked up this post is wonder what that "shroom" i ate came from...

Same here actually.

As for the relation between NFS and LFS, my theory is...
Need for Speed is just that - the need for speed. The urge to go fast, nothing more.
Live for Speed means that you have to live to be fast, it means dedication, concentration, hours of training and experience.

there are hardly any people from slovakia/czech rep. who would pronounce it properly... but for example if you have LIVE in a meaning of LIVE TV broadcasting it is pronounced [laiv] - that is a bit closer

funny to look at your avatar while reading your post...it seems to be so serious when "jeremy is saying that"
omgz this is race sim not speed sim

How about Live to Flame ?
Next time someone asks me, "what games do you like," I am going to respond, "I don't play games, I live for speed."
They'll just think you're an ultra-hard-core nfs player or a weirdo.... But it's worth a try.

Until this game, err... sim goes final S3 and we see it on the shelves etc. no-ones gonna know what we are on about.

I told one of the sales reps at EB games I play Live For speed, and he said, "oh the one with all the old school cars?"

I was like ..... then I was like
I'm already a weirdo, I play live for speed more than I sleep. So that doesn't bother me much.
Have no money to drive real car, just live for speed.
And gokarts!
Quote from SparkyDave :IIRC is was decided via a community poll over at RSC

Nope, there was no poll for the name, it was LFS from the start. Although there was competition/poll for the LFS logo. Badly needed as the old logo was .... meh.

Apologies for getting it wrong, Yes I remember seeing something like that logo. and defo remember the logo comp
My memorys not what it it used to be
Thats got me wondering why/how/who did name the project "LiveForSpeed" my guess is it must have been Scawen, possibly even in his Lionhead days, who first thought it up?

Quote from bavorak :I like the name - "Life for speed" - it nicely defines the game and my feeling while playing it but it is really confusing for people who hear the name for the first time and I also hate the whole explaining that no, I am not a 10-year old child playing nfs... this is something far different...
I remember only one time that a friend of mine asked me what I was playing on the wheel and I said Live for speed and I automatically started explaining and he stopped me that he knew the game

and the other problem is...when I explain it is a great simulator and they want to try it, majority of them cant make one corner properly which seems like it is very far from reality but I think the problem is they dont feel the speed because going 80kph in lfs is like going 30kph in a real car...if you dont feel the forces it really degrades feeling of speed

The problem is that they are mostly used to taking a corner doing 160mph. I hardly ever used brakes in NFS. Better yet, LFS is a shitty game because you cannot drift properly, you need to use too many inputs at the same time, which sucks.

I remember playing NFS again after a long period of LFS-ing and I just couldn't believe how wrong this POS game is. How could have I thought back then that I was a good driver? I was speeding (massively) in a Gallardo through a downtown, handbrake turns everywhere, nitrous blazing through the engine and humongous motion blur all around your head, YEAH!

Oh and sorry for going offtopic, but since it is my thread, I am excused :P

Yes this is a major problem as with a lot of other software I have. Every time I try to draw pictures with my programming text editor, do calculations with my paint program, or balance my checkbook using my media player I have the same thought you did.

Give him a break. As long as his intention was not to complain about there are no options to setup the lock to a 1440 degrees there's nothing wrong with that.
I think that there is some misunderstanding.

I was being sarcastic. What I meant to say is: Lots of people, mainly kids, play Need for Speed for hours and then they think that they are the best drifters in the world. These same kids then somehow get sat behind a G25 and LFS and start to complain about it being a shitty game, because you need to do too much stuff at a time to achieve a 2-second drift.

I was the same. I remember yelling: "Why doesn't the f...ing car brake better? Why do I oversteer all the time? Why do I have to go so slow through every corner? This LFS game sucks!"

Then I got the hang of it and after some time I nostalgically returned to playing NFS and I must say I was amazed how bad, and I mean BAAAD (as in PowerGlove baaad) the arcadey physics are.

Ah, I see. Sometimes I don't read properly. :twirl: I just saw Schooners post with what he quoted and commented on that.^^
Quote from breadfan :I think that there is some misunderstanding.

My sincere apology, the misunderstanding was mine. I was speed reading and saw "LSF sucks for drifting" and.... well....

I have nothing against drifters, or drifting, or anything anyone wants to do with the game they bought. As long as they go to the drift servers, or the cruise servers, more power to them. I thought someone was complaining about not being able to drift in a racing simulator.

OT - I can't think of a better name for LFS. Fits perfectly.

Well I was playing NFS as well but when I discovered LFS and couldn't brake or turn properly I was somehow happy that I finally found THE game (simulator) because NFS was year by year reason why I started this searching :P .
i always get people saying oh you mean need for speed you noob and then i just respond to no your the noob you play nfs i play a good game not as funny when typed

Im totally with you on that one!

Its so funny when you PWN people by throwning it back at them, the usual dialouge looks like this.

Person- What games do you play.

me- [insert game here] and [insert game here] and Live For Speed(LFS)

Person- you mean Need For Speed (and looks at me like im a total n00b)

me- no this is a different game, its much better...

Person- Sounds like a cheap copy, cant be better than NFS!

me- its doesnt have anything to do with NFS other than the simular names.

Then i explain all about LFS. And occasionally someone takes interest in the game and some people just says "ok sounds like crap, ill go play NFS most wanted".
all ym friends are liek omgz new nfz az got da skyline n u can mod em up n that its well sik then i say yoou should try lfs and there liek i just said i played nfs u noob then i describe lfs and they always say omg sounds fur gud but can u tun up ur carz n that and put body kitz on i jus {insert facepalm}
