Good power supply on a budget.
Well my PSU just bit the dust. About 1 3/4 years it lasted. I can understand why it died. It was ususually under load due to my gaming. Luckily I know from the past what can happen when a cheap psu dies (my dad's old psu basically exploded but luckily didn't take out his pc) so I had bought a decent PSU which when it died fizzled out with no dramatic burning. Anyway I am looking for something with more than enough power for my system. My budget is probably around £50 so I am looking for something decent which will last. I would rather go with someone trust worthy like OCZ or Anatec. Anyway it needs to have enough power for a AMD Phenom 2 940
Nvidia GTS250 Green edition
8gb Crucial balistix ram.
And I would like to be able to have power spare for sli in the future if I ever decide to. Anyway the lowest wattage I would feel is alright would be about 500W. And It needs to have enough cables for the mobo, gfx card, dvd drives, 2 sata hard drives and a floppy disk drive. Ofcourse I will have to stick to UK based shops as it is my dad who will be ordering it.

I aint bothered about fancy lights or anything like that. I just need a PSU which won't kill my pc when it dies and will last a long time.

Thanks in advance.
Corsair VX450W.

It's not 500W, but it should be enough (even if you decide to SLI your 250GTS). And it is around the budget limit.
Corsair is pretty much the best at the moment and they also have a 5 year warranty.
50 Euro to buy an HX450? I spent 70 dollars (35 Euro?) to buy a TX750! LOL... but it was on sale =). Regardless, Corsair makes quality PSUs, and you can trust them to get the job done. As long as you are not running 3 8800 Ultras in Tri SLI on that PSU, you should be fine
Parts are more expensive here in Europe. The usual conversion ratio seems to be 1:1 too even though the real ratio is more like 1.5:1.

VX450W is £55 in overclockers.co.uk. Maybe there are a cheaper shops out there. I just used it to check the general price range for those.

Would you rate this as a good PSU?

http://www.tekheads.co.uk/prod ... upply-500-Watt_24985.html

and does it have all the right connectors?

edit: is OCZ's RMA service really as good as the testimonials say? If so then I will probably go with that PSU
edit: can a asrock asrock k10n78 be run with 1 4 pin connector? I think it can. (If the socket with the little 8 pin sticker is the one i am thinking of)
OCZ is fine. Not as good as Corsair though.

You should be able to run it with just one 4 pin connector, but new PSUs should come with a 8pin connector.

Looks like not:

- 24 pin ATX power connector
- 8 pin 12V power connector

Unless it's this variant that is:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=K10N78D

- 24 pin ATX power connector
- 4 pin 12V power connector

Edited to add - this is something that really bugs me about motherboard models. Different variants of the same model mobo can have significantly differerent layout and connectivity. I really wish manufacturers would just give the mobos completely different model numbers to avoid confusion and expensive mistakes.
Both of them work both ways.

If your mobo has a 8pin connector you can use it with a 4 pin cable from PSU.
If you mobo has a 4pin connector the 8pin cable from PSU breaks in half and you can use the 4pins from it.

Atleast according to this thread:

Hmm it may "work", but put it this way. Why would a mobo manufacturer create an 8 pin connector with multiple 12v & 5v connections etc if a 4 pin (single 12v & 5v) connection was all that was needed? Seems obvious to me that the 8 pin was created for a reason.

Well at least it didn't explode.

I asked my dad and he said my mobo is 4 pin.

Well the problem is more than the psu the comp won't boot now. I suspect the Mobo is ****ed
ah err sorry for triple post.

Orders the 600w OCZ stealthXstream and a pioneer dvd rw (the one i have now broke a while ago)
IT LIVES WOOOT IT LIVES.

seems like the cmos got ****ed up when the psu died. with the new ocz psu it boots. First time. Just pulled the cmos battery for a min and it is good as new.
Corsair 400CX, i'm hearing all the good things about it, i'm picking one tomorrow..

Good power supply on a budget.
