I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the focus meetings for this, I am sure there must have been at least one voice who piped up saying "surely the suckers aren't going to fall for this one, are they?".

They have invented something to solve a problem that isn't there, Apple seem to have a bit of a superiority complex, and that is VERY apparent with the iPad.
I would like such a thing, but not to watch movies on or listen music with or play games. It would be a cool remote controll for MPD (but not at these prices ), e-book and e-mail reader. But for these things it's better to buy some cheap Chinese Windows Mobile tablet (that only costs 100 euro).

I still have my HTC Shift to use as a tablet, but it's a bit crippled by HTC (they removed a lot of functionality in the software, while that thing has all the hardware it needs).
Quote from Electrik Kar :The iPad makes laptops look like clunky dinosaurs by comparison.

actually it proves that 90% of the time a fixed keyboard and screen is the only sensible solution to interfacing with a computer

as far as i can tell the only tiny advantage this thing has over something like the acer 1810ptz is that the screens currently used on nigh on all laptops (including the acer and even expensive ones) are utterly rubbish while the ipads screen is actually rather good (although a glossy screen on a touch oriented device is still the most stupid idea in the history of computer displays)

Much rather get an Archos 9 now, cheaper and has Windows 7 so will be more compatable with things. Plus it actually has a USB port.... haha.

Wow... You seriously want to spend 500 bucks to hang something to your wall so you don't have to wait 5 minutes for you computer to boot? God you're a tool.
Please be patient, flaming will start soon

Damn, predicting this on a forum is ingenious!

No.
I'm going to use it for msn/skype + internet.
Half my time on my computer im just on these three things. And because my tv is my monitor i cant watch tv at the same time. Nor can i PS3.
I've been wanting a laptop of some sort for a while so i can relax in bed and watch tv.
But just recently started looking at tablet PC's.
It's not JUST going to be on my wall you know Will only be on there 1/4 of the time.

I'm just saying if you spend that amount of money for that amount of use I consider you are a spoilt little sprog.
I just watched a short clip on BBC news with Stephen Fry regarding this and he more so focused on the fact the Apple online store will now offer books to challenge the Amazon and Sony e-reader, but again...I found you could get an app and do this on the itouch/iphone anyway, but it won't beat the e-readers because of the screen technology used in the readers to imitate paper.

What do you mean "for that amount of use"?
I'd be using it an unbelivable ammount!
I'd be using it majority of the time, only time i wouldn't would be when im doing complicated work on my PC but chances are it'll still be in the background playing music.
But besides then i'm going to be constantly on it, using it for msn, skype, facebook, email checking, homework, coding, video viewing, music listning.
So i don't get what you mean by "for that amount of use"?
iPad myself every night because iCan.
Btw jking. But i love the i infront of everything cause you can make so many jokes about it

I think its pretty cool, but not for me.
At first, I was massively disappointed due to the hype before the announcement. But now I am starting to like it. It is growing on me. I guess the only problem is the lack of multitasking, which I think will be fixed with iPhone OS 4.0. I reckon the reason why they didn't put a full Mac OSX is because OSX is not optimised for touch interface. The buttons are too small on OSX. Microsoft made that mistake with their tablets and failed miserably. Other than the interface, I think the iPad doesn't have enough power to run a full OSX anyways. With a pad this thin and light, running iPhone OS that smoothly is rather impressive. I don't really have a problem with the iPhone OS as long as Apple will fix the multitask problem. Other than that, I am quite happy with the iPad. I might get one when it comes out.

BTW, apple now allows VOIP call over 3G. So in theory people can make calls with their iPad (but i dont think anyone will, they would look stupid).
Thing I was wondering. Why would someone buy a 829$ iPad (that's the 32GB one) instead of a laptop? You can get a pretty reasonable laptop these days for 829$. Assuming that you'd pay as much for the iPad's 3G connection as you'd do for your laptop's, and that the battery life is somewhat similar, I don't see what the iPad really has of an advantage. 32GB is pretty poor is term of storage, especially for something that's got a screen you'd want to watch movies on. I guess that the iPad would be easier to use, but then again who doesn't know how to use a computer anymore?
The thing is, iPad is never meant to replace our notebook (which is why iPad syncs with iTunes). It is to fill in the gap between your phone and your laptop. The iPhone is too small for reading and emailing while you are sitting on the couch, and the laptop is just way too big/heavy. That is the market the iPad is designed for. People uses their netbooks as their 2nd/3rd device, and iPad is meant to replace the netbooks. Like I said, the netbooks is never a success because their are ridiculously slow. They may have a decent atom processor, but the OS/apps they are running were designed for processors that are a lot powerful than the Atom processor.

This is a good review that everyone should read:

Seriously, but seriously stupid that it doesn't have a flash support, nor USB and storage capacity is a joke.

The problem is that due to modern demands placed on portable computing there are too many gaps which apparently need filling now. We have the home computer for big tasks and serious work/entertainment. Then the less powered laptop for mobile computing, a netbook for light web browsing/emailing, a smaller gadget still for music and phone, and none of these work as good replacements for each other but each is somehow deemed necessary for proper societal functioning. Also now there are the eReaders arriving, beginning life as another seperate device. I can imagine people buying an iPad for web surfing (on the couch) and a Kindle or similar for ebooks. We'll justify this somehow but it's still stupid. It's just techno fetishism.

I reckon an iPad sized computer which doubles as an eReader (e-ink or similar) and is powerful enough to be a laptop replacement... that would be a great little gadget...

(I know we're not there yet but I will definitely hold out on any of this stuff until we are)

The only people I see who uses netbooks are tossers who has to be online ALL THE TIME, people who chat online while they are in the subway...on the bus, or even walking.

People are way too addicted with electronic gadgets.

My laptop can do all my work, I can sim race on it, I can plug a HDMI cable to my HDTV and watch movies, it plays music, it plays porn, it makes videos, it doesn't have a E-book software and it isn't designed to be stared at a long time, so it pretty much do everything except make a good ebook, but hey you know there are books printed on paper as well.....

Oh maybe I can't update my facebook status or twit while I am on a taxi, but I am yet desperate enough to seek attention online every 15 mins.

I agree with you cause I am one of those people :S But unfortunately as long as people keep buying these stuff, companies will continue to make these stuff and sell it.

that must be why they make up ~20% of the laptop market now then?

netbooks are the biggest success story in the mobile segment in the last years and its easy to see why
slashdot is a good read sometimes...

Quote :In an event eerily reminiscent of Cisco's suit over Apple's use of the 'iPhone' name, Japanese firm Fujitsu is consulting its attorneys in preparation for going to court over Apple's use of 'iPad' for its latest computing device. Quoted in a New York Times story, Masahiro Yamane, director of Fujitsu's public relations division, said 'It's our understanding that the name is ours.' Fujitsu's application to trademark the iPad name stalled because of an earlier filing by another company and the US Patent and Trademark Office listed Fujitsu's application as abandoned in early 2009, but the company revived its application in June. Apple, which has applied for an international trademark on 'iPad' through a proxy company, has filed a number of requests with the US Patent Office for more time to oppose Fujitsu's application.

lawsuit!

personally, i didn't like the name to start with, and it's not like we needed another DRM filled e-reader...
