On the other cars, I drive better with the default cockpit view, but I don't like the race as much as when I use the external view (I know, no mirrors = danger)
It was nice to have situational awareness, but as you can't feel the car's movement (beyond the steering wheels FFB) you rely heavily on the visual feedback. I found I either reacted too slowly or over corrected with the Track IR. Nice idea, but I think the ideal solution is a fixed but much larger surrounding view to help situational awareness. Can't fit the Mugar Omni theatre in my apartment though...
I could be wrong, but I think I recall that RudiTurbo set some serious hotlap records using ridiculously low FOVs, like 45 or something wierd.
I know I drive a bit better with around 70 which is what I think I use. I can't remember right now actually. As far as seeing around me, it's no problem using the left/right view buttons. If I know someone's there (if they're there I do know) I just leave necessary room and I don't have problems hitting people. er, NOT hitting people, er... whatever. I don't crash
OMG everyone uses such a low FOV, I used to have 105 of FOV but now I switched to 95 and I see everything so damn slow, when running below 100Km/h everything seems to be suspended but in the other cand I can have more clean lines and see better where i'm going.
BTW, I don't use mirrors, that's one of the reasons why I used that FOV, my computer doesn't allow me to use mirrors and have decent FPS
The fact is that real life doesn't seem that fast either. Going down the highway at 100KM/H doesn't really seem like much if you try make note of how fast scenery is moving past. I used to run the higher FOVs like RiGun when I first got into LFS in S1. Now I get much more feel with the lower FOVs, it seems easier to relate to real life. Driving with high FOVs seems like I'm in hyperspace or something.
tbh it doesn;t matter what the default is ( although I think default is 90 ) its what you actually fell confortable with. I won;t go into my settings, as the T7R team will tell you how screwed my settings are, but I am comfortable with them, I enjoy them, and I like them, but thats me.
Wheel view 120FOV but i like the sense of speed, as I said thats me
Just experiment, and find a value that suits you. If everybody done the same thing at the same time, using the same settings, what a boring world it would be
Cool, thanks. I'll have to try that. I have a program called "Freelook" based on the same thing. Use a webcam and either a bright piece of paper or an LED light on the bill of a hat. I look ridiculous because my kids have the perfect little flashlight thingy that doesn't have a reflector behind it. I tried to tape it up on the bill of my hat. The only problem is, it is shaped and colored like a ladybug, LOL. Imagine what that looks like, hehehe. I can't use the headphones with it, because I want to hear the wife coming down the steps so I can whip the hat off and not look like a moron .
Actually, I've been trying to get it to work, but haven't had any luck. I will try the program you linked there. I want it more for flying in MS Flight Sim.
Back in college, my brother-in-law (was just a friend back then) and I pretty much street raced everywhere we went. We both had small japanese cars, wasn't all that fast, but they handled and were fast enough for on the road. It was nothing for either of us to be doing 120 mph probably 80% of the time we were in the car with eachother or following each other. I know, that was 15 years ago and I'm now older, wiser, and a father, so don't preach. That's a different story.
My point is, now we both have kids, we work at the same place, and our wives are sisters. We both gave up on the little "fun" cars for more practical cars for the wives and we both have pickup trucks for hauling stuff home that our pretty ladies constantly buy, LOL. His is needing repairs, so I took him up to the store to haul a new tractor for him. Now, we have some great roads over here in upper Western Pennsylvania, and as we were climbing up and down and around all the roads we use to "race" on, I asked him. "Hey, do you ever wish you still had a little car like we use to have and run around in?" He says, "Oh yea! I'd love to pick something up, but it's not practical, I need a new truck." He says then, "You know? It's really funny. I take the Subaru out now and then, and now I find at 100 mph, it feels SO FREAKING FAST!" I'm like, "I know exactly what you mean after years of driving the POS truck, then heading out in the Altima."
My point there was, first, I thought it was a funny story, at least to us it is, since how we use to drive together. And second, it's all in what you're use to. If you're use to 90 FOV, then anything lower seems ridiculously slow to you. If you use 60 (like me), then 90 looks like your playing in fast-forward mode. Same in real life. It was nothing for us to be doing 120-125 mph, elbow up on the door sill, two fingers on the wheel just cruising along. Now 15 years later, I get up above 85 mph or something, and I'm hanging on the wheel with two hands, concentration is on driving at that speed, where before it was nothing.
