Extreme apathy can be qualified as a measure of intelligence. When people express their apathy of a topic as and excuse to dodge a challenging proposal or question for the sake of not wanting to think about it reveals a lacking in certain areas of comprehension or restraint. For an example: Person A "covers their ears" when a logical argument is being made against them by person B. Denying the logic when person A can comprehend or knows that it is true can be categorized as stupid.
(My example is just that, an example. It is not being directed toward anybody partaking in the discussion.)
In the example Person A has the ability to comprehend but chooses not to exercise the ability. The reason for Person A choosing to not listen does not matter. Person A choosing to not listen does matter. When a person chooses not to comprehend it is called ignorance which has two meanings:
The literal meaning-
the state or fact of being ignorant; lack of knowledge, learning, information, etc.
The cultural meaning(insult)-
choosing to disregard information of particular subject or fact.
Being ignorant is not stupid. Choosing to be ignorant is stupid. In cases of being presented a topic that one is not informed on, has too little knowledge on the topic to discuss on is uninterested, admitting to these lackings is the proper message to convey.
