They show up as colored boxes like this:

It fixed itself once and was fine the whole time but it came back when I re-unlocked the game yesterday.

The images which are supposed to show up there are characters inside LFS's font bank. Did you delete some files from the LFS folder or something? I suggest you do a clean install of LFS and see if that helps.

you are missing lfs.abc or have the lfs.abc file from the LFS viewer.
