LFS needs karts!
check THIS out

slimjim plays LFS, but its a shame to see rFactor get karts. i hope slim doesnt mind me saying im not massively hyped by the fact that sum1 modded karts into rF.

the good thing about karts in LFS would be that it would be pretty close racing, and if u ram someone or get rammed/ sideswiped u probably wouldnt damage your kart much and u can carry on going. which makes it ideal for current LFS drivers!

what ya'll think?
Cool, might have to drag rFactor out of its dusty, spiderweb encrusted area of my hard-drive when that gets released.

As for LFS needing them?, yep, it does, along with about 1000 other different types of car/motorsport.

LMFAO. Brilliant.

Karts in LFS would KIIIICK arse. i'm seriously hoping that the next addition to the LFS community of vehicles are karts. They're so much fun to drive in real life and the racing is close.
Karts won't officially be added until we have proper or atleast rudimentary body flex modelled, because that is essential to get remotely correctly handling karts. I couldn't care less if rFactor has karts or shopping trolleys or whatever, as long as the ISI engine powers it, it doesn't even come close to being a threat.

It might spark a bit of interest in autocrossing. The thousands of virtual MRT5s out there have been mostly gathering dust of late.
well yeah, as bob said. Autocross would be the best place to start. If Eric were to model up a few different sized curbs that you could place around the autocross area and mix them with a tyre outer barrier then that'd be good. i mean there are alot of karting tracks like that am I wrong? i went to one at the start of may. ALOT of fun being in an 18 racer field. Alot of carnage and fun.
nope kart circuits are just like normal tracks but shorter.

proper karts can be run on any circuits. rotax max is used on circuits like Oulten Park, silverstone etc, anf they are only fixed gear.

circuits like FE club and as club would be considered small kart tracks

You can take a rotax on a long circuit? When? Do they have races/practice days for Jnr Max too?

I really really really really really really reeeaaallllyyyy want karts in LFS
Karts are run on basically every major car track here in the usa. I guess it isn't very big in Europe but there's a type of karting called Road Racing, which is longer races (30-45min usually) run on car tracks like Road America, Mid Ohio, even the 2 mile daytona speedway with the infield course. But yeah, karts are the only thing I really really want in LFS.
Some of Jim's original karts on a track I haven't completed building yet (many textures have already been replaced, most of those were placeholders at a very early beta stage) and a prokart (modeled from memory, so probably a fair few faults / inacuracies atm and ignore the small driver ) I was working on and since offered Jim incase he wants to include another class later down the line

The physics were VERY iffy in the previous version though.. once you started to spin, it was game over, the kart had the physics of a piece of paper blowing in the wind and you could pretty much decide how long you wanted to remain in the air by controlling the throttle, heh.. but getting kart physics out of an engine designed for cars isn't easy (lost count of how many times I crashed rF trying to simulate 2 5.5hp engines with no log entry as to why ).

Karts I think LFS would do well at reproducing

Regards,

Ian
I want karts being an ex-karter but I want them done properly. Not just a 3D model with 4 wheels and a hacked together physics. A kart has no suspension so relays on chassis flex which is something I don't think LFS currently models ?

Keiran
hmm, it really needs the engine core to accept such configs, but I think Jim did a pretty good job to start with. Some things had to be fudged (it has suspension but very very little.. almost unnoticable etc) and they handled funky once they got air under them, but were still a massive hoot to drive.. the next version I'll be interested in trying out

Don't think LFS does simulate that (yet).. does any sim? I didn't do any pro karting, mainly mechanics and for some fun, but would be cool to have a somewhat realistic kart sim

Regards,

Ian
even a beta kart sim within LFS would be good, and it could be improved with karters feedback over time. The castor could be used to simulate chassis flex.

and Liedfe (?) jnr max only have 20hp so they are too slow for proper tracks, and its probably too dangerous for juniors for insurance reasons.
rFactor seems to be one step ahead... They have also got the Sauber. Can't wait to see what the Devs do to fight back with the next update/version!!
What would be cool would be to get karts properly modelled in LFS, get a kart track officially and properly modelled, and then have an LFS booth at the kart track. Hours of fun.
would like to see a kart in LFS. Especially(sp error?) since we might need to fight against RF.

I think that chassis flex should be added before weather.

A larger autocross environment with kerbs would be great, in the same environment as a 5km drag strip.

AFAIK, the only "sim" that supports chassis flex is Rigs of Rods

it's very very very unfinished, but I think it has potential...

I could probably get permission to get my old local kart track modelled. They are currently struggling for members so to them it would be good advertisement. Since me and my Dad know quite a lot of people that are on the committee from when we raced karts I don't see a reason why they wouldn't want the track in the game.

17.2Mb - 4min 50sec

The track is called Boyndie located not far from Banff in Scotland. I just tried out the new track layout a couple of weekends ago as it's changed to what I used to race on and it's awesome

Take a look at the video clip to see some onboard footage of a Rotax Max lapping around the track, that's what I used to race

Ouch at the audio quality on that. Almost painful to listen to.

Two 16 bits channels at 44100 samples per second into a single 64 kilobit data stream (over 20:1 ratio) is asking a bit much of any compression technology.
Using a single 16 bit channel at half the sample rate would've made it much more listenable, meaning the cheesy music could've been dispensed with too

The vid itself was pretty good though

Been round that track myself some years ago. Twice to be exact
I broke someones twin-engined kart on the 2nd lap, so that was the end of that. Stripped something important in the drivetrain I think.
And on the previous trip there, just as my friend was beginning to get the hang of it, the engine of the kart he was driving at the time seized. Something about old fuel that had seperated out
i bet the devs could get some kind of deal with a kart manufacturer similar to that of the BF1...
keiran - cool. There's a little (and I do mean small) outdoor kart track at Goodwood, I stumbled across it when I went for a flying lesson there a few weeks back. I was thinking, a nice sunny summer day, some measuring tape, a coupe of mates and plenty of patience, I could then re-create it in autocross that evening.

Unfortunately Goodwood circuit is just off the edge of the high res scan on google maps: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps? ... 0.027122&t=k&om=1

At first I had a hard time with the Rotax karts since they only used rear brakes. It would either spin out, or not stop in a straight line. Anybody that has driven one of these knows they are very easy to control, and stop very quickly, even with no front brakes. So I had to make a few adjustments to a few files.
I added front brakes in the file to help with stability under braking. But it doesn't show in the game, and you have no control over any brake bias with the Rotax.

Can you say FUDGE? I'd rather wait until LFS or rFactor implement chassis flex.
More power to SlimJim for getting his Kart project tied to a bigger wagon.

I don't own rfactor, and don't plan to, but am still happy to see him suceed.
