Well, I'd say that elderly drivers are AS dangerous AS younger drivers.
Younger drivers tend to go faster -thinking that "fast is cool"-, and elderly drivers tend to go much slower, causing younger drivers (which are in a hurry, as always) to try to overtake them, even if there isn't the space/the possibility.
I'd therefore say that it's both young and old people's fault.

For example, I was going in my -quite riced up- friend's Peugeot 106 XS as a passenger. To impress me, he went pedal to the metal round a corner, without changing the angle of the steering wheel. So we went straight into the wrong lane, where luckily there was nobody. I then asked him to take me back to my car, and never went in his car since then.

On the other hand, my cousin was having an accident with an OAP. My cousin was in a roundabout, and the old man entered at speed, almost crashing into my cousin's 206. After that they stopped to a level crossing and the man knocked to her window, yelling "You had to give me way, I came from the right!" my cousin, in a friendly way, said him "No, sir, I'm sorry... I was in a roundabout, and in roundabouts who is inside it has the right of way, so it was your fault...".
Seeing that he went mad, and said that she couldn't drive and so on, she said "It's not my problem if when you got your driving license roundabouts hadn't been invented yet!" and drove away
