Quote from Becky Rose :And today I read the news that my suspisions of the Torys have more than a little validity as they've just appointed Theresa May as, and check this out, Minsiter for Equality.

If you where still in any doubt over the Conservatives position on civil liberty issues, then surely the appointment of the woman who's consistently voted against establishing equality for gays throughout her career as an MP tells it all.

She voted against equalising the age of consent for gays, she twice voted against gay couples being allowed to adopt, she voted against lesbians being allowed to use fertility clinics/services and she voted against section 28. She didn't bother voting on the Gender Recognition act and only voted in favour of civil unions because the Conservative party was trying to appease the pink vote at the time (the whole front bench voted in favour of it), despite the Conservatives bargaining down the right to marry.

She is the most ill-equipped person to serve as a "Minister for Equality", holds prejudicial views and will not be able to function in any humanitarian role without leaving behind a legacy of hypocracy.

To me this spells out everything about Conservative attitudes towards civil liberties.

Ah, I'm reminded of this video interview where Big Dave C gets a bit confused as to what he thinks about gay-rights.
Quote from Crashgate3 :To lighten the mood a little, try putting 'David Cameron side profile' into Google Images.

How appropriate haha!
Quote from Intrepid :Maybe it's time for Scotland to split from England then?

This is a big part of what I don't like about Tories. First they want to isolate us from Europe, then divide up the UK, next I suppose it'll be independence for the home counties, then perhaps west London will need to be recognised as its own state and "the countryside" will need its own devolved parliament so they can start hunting foxes again, because if you can't hunt foxes well ****, what sort of a country are you living in.
Quote from DarkTimes :Ah, I'm reminded of this video interview where Big Dave C gets a bit confused as to what he thinks about gay-rights.

Temporarily lost track of whether he was talking to the press or his own party I reckon. It's not easy being duplicitous.
Quote from thisnameistaken :First they want to isolate us from Europe

No it's not quite as simple as that.

What the Tories (and anyone with any common sense) do not want is economical governance and monetary policy taken away from the UK and put in Brussels.

The EU have already suggested they have input of national budgets. Monetary union and mass centralisation of power is really not an avenue you want to go down. Just look at the Euro and the EU atm. it's a total mess with Germany pulling all the strings because they've been forced into bailing everyone out. It doesn't work, it will never work, and it's something we shouldn't be involved in.

Free trade - Yes
Single currency - No
Being governed by the EU - No

There is a massive difference between having free trade, even freedom of movement within Europe (which really isn't a bad thing) and then actually being GOVERNED by the EU! Let me ask you this. Did you vote for or against the EU president who is wanting to put in place an an EU wide 'economic government'??? No, none of us VOTED for... or against... because we didn't get the chance to vote!
Charlie Brooker on Tories:

Quote :The Conservative party is an eternally irritating force for wrong that appeals exclusively to bigots, toffs, money-minded machine men, faded entertainers and selfish, grasping simpletons who were born with some essential part of their soul missing.

Quote from thisnameistaken :Charlie Brooker on Tories:

Guardian writer and BBC presenter slates the tories... no shit! lol Shock horror! I like CHalrie but look at his hair? What's happened to him? anyway a real man quote now

Winston Churchill - "If you're not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you're not a conservative at forty you have no brain."

That pretty much sums it up. Even I, was once a Liberal 'wishy washy' type. Suddenly woke up a bit when the tax man started asking, sorry, DEMANDING money!

Shock! Horror! You had to pay taxes?!

Typical miser.
Quote from 5haz :Typical miser.

A miser is someone who doesn't like spending money, which is a tad different to not liking taxation.
Quote from Intrepid :A miser is someone who doesn't like spending money, which is a tad different to not liking taxation.

Obviously nobody likes taxation but its a necessary evil. Even your beloved Tories are going to raise taxes and you seem horrified at the prospect of paying anything at all: 'how dare the government spend my money on less fortunate people!' Therefore you are a miser.
I don't think it has anything to do with less fortunate people... taxes are also used to pay for things for equally or more fortunate people. Most is wasted on needless bureaucracy regardless of who is in power.
Quote from tristancliffe :Most is wasted on needless bureaucracy regardless of who is in power.

True, and it's only going to get worse. I would like to see better value for money for my taxes, I wouldn't mind paying so much if I wasn't aware that such a large proportion is going to fund giant teams of bureaucrats who don't have any real reason to exist.

I'd like to see a drastic reduction in taxation full stop instead of dreaming of better value for money. It is just a fact of life that people spend other people's money less carefully than they would spend their own. If you give 300 or so MPs billions of pounds of taxation every year than there is no doubt that billions will be wasted. It's inevitable. It will either be wasted in bureaucracy or wasted expanding state power as we saw with Lab. That's the very nature of the beast. Unfortunately that very nature has caused the biggest financial crisis for years which we'll all have to pay for through higher taxes for years to come

How anyone can justify Silverstone receiving public funds I do not know. A sport exclusively for the only very very wealthy and they get public moneyl
doesn't matter who won the election. you're all screwed by this greek bailout anyway. At least Germany had the balls to hold out for a little while seeing as they have first hand experience with the hyperinflation thats coming your way.

France: "If you don't join in on this bailout we're going to pull out of the Euro and nuke the entire European economy right now, instead of later"
Quote from Intrepid :

because it's an "investment" not a grant. Northamptonshire is motor sport capital with a noteable percentage of the population engaged in motorsport professions.

That's the rationale anyway, whether it's the right thing to do or not is another matter. My opinion: Why now?
Quote from Intrepid :How anyone can justify Silverstone receiving public funds I do not know. A sport exclusively for the only very very wealthy and they get public moneyl

I think that sort-of makes sense, given that Britain is a motorsport specialist.

More strangely, there are lots of funds available from the public purse to support orchestras, ballet, opera and theatre (but not jazz, for some reason). I happen to know a lot of people who work primarily in theatre but I'm aware that it's weird, and that they're basically civil servants in the private sector.

I worked in theatres for quite a while and could never figure out where they were getting the money to freely waste on a week to week basis. They employed someone, a stage worker, who did nothing... all day! Then they told me about the unions and the support from public money and it all made sense. Truly terrible, conflicted, and weird as you say.
