Just got a wheel
Hey guys. i just actualy recieved a free wheel from a friend.. Looks VERY old haha. i just wannt to ttry it with the game and see how it is before i buy s2 and better wheels. only problem is that the wheel's wire cant fit into my computer. What im talking about is the little thing at the end of the wire that looks like the thing on the end of printer wires the little cartridge wont fit into my computer. Is their a converter i can buy so it will fit into my computer?
any picture would help, it is hard to get what type of plug it is.
thats a VGA cable, its for moniters, its best if you take a quick picture of the real one, with either a phone, or a camera, if you take it with a phone you can send it to your email adress, and either use the upload feature on the forums, or upload it to tinypic.com for free
I'm assuming it's a serial port if it looks like that, you can probably get a serial to usb converter somewhere.
alright thanks guys. ill take a quick pic soon. thanks for the replies though. expect a pic soon of the actualy thing. this wheel is horriable haha but it will work =P
out of curiousity is it force feedback? how many degrees of rotation? any shifter? pedals? will it even work with a modern computer?
haha here it is. http://www.amazon.com/InterAct ... acing-Wheel/dp/B00000JDDY

idk any of the specs. but here is the plug that im talking about. i know it has wheel and pedals!

here is a pic

left plug is for pedals right is for wheel.

we will find out soon enough if it works =P. cc im embarrassed showing this wheel.
hmm...im no expert with plugs, but it looks like the pedals' plug goes where the mouse or keyboard go back when they had the circular hole

the one on the right, for the wheel. not really sure, count the pins and google # pin plug where plug in.
its a vga? i thought that would fit in my computer in the back? maybe it is being used by my monitior. not sure. ill check again tommrow. atm studying for finals =/
it isnt vga, thats only for moniters, because it just handles graphics information...not sure what it is..it just looks like VGA
oh. lol wow that is wierd....

7 + 8 pins it's a good old serial joystick...
They were used with sound cards not so long ago (a few years) but have now completely disappeared (sound cards don't even come with a serial port anymore), I actually still have one of these and my secondary sound card is an old SoundBlaster 1024 with serial port.

You've got two solutions: either put your hands on an old sound card like mine - should be really, really cheap but make sure the necessary drivers exist for your system first - either buy a serial / usb adapter. But note that even if the adapter does work (it's likely) you may not get the full functionalities. When using my old flight controller with a USB adapter for example I can't use the hats (they're not seen by my system). But it works fully when plugged on the SB.

You've got an other problem too, it's that plug for the pedals... It will very likely require a specific driver! With that old wheel you'll be lucky if you find one that works on any modern system...

Seb.
I think the proper name for that connector is "gameport", don't get it confused with RS232 serial connector as they are two different things. Gameport to USB adaptor is 10 USD thing, so you can just go ahead and get one. It might work and it might not, you'll have to give it a try. Just make sure you get the adaptor which allows you to connect gameport devices to USB port, not the other way around.

Yes, correct. USB adapters exist:

The second plug I do not know but the picture is very blurred
It looks like a little like a "Klinkenstecker" (stero jack?) so I would guess maybe it does not go into the computer? Might sound stupid but did you have a look if the pedals must be connected to the wheel?
It works like this with my Momo wheel.
Is it a Microsoft Sidewinder? I was looking at my old one in the garage last night when I dug out my old DFP to set up a LAN in my place. I think I was told once that yes it can work with an adapter but there was something negative about it hence I went and got the DFP then the G25. Whatever you do trust me the experience is awesome with a good wheel (G25 or G27) Good luck

wheel itself has some pretty bad reviews on amazon, I think it's clear why it was a freebie. Understandably you want to try it out. You have a slim chance the adapter will work, the extra plug, (PS/2 type looking plug) no idea there, so pedals may even not work once the adapter is hooked up.

Be prepared if you spend say $10 on an adapter it may OR may not work. If it does work and you are impressed, from my own experience a proper Force Feedback wheel will be 100 times more fun than a cheap 270 degree spring wheel and you will notice right away that a cheap free wheel will be about 90 times more fun than using a keyboard to drive.

ie: Decent FFB wheel is 900 times more fun than keyboard.

it actually looks like an old game port. Haven't seen one on those in years. They used to come on the older sound blaster cards.

Good luck in finding one.
Lol! I've just seen the pic at Amazon...
I used to have one of these loooong ago, although I do not remember about the secondary plug for the pedals... Are you sure it does not go into the wheel directly? I think it does.
Anyway, I believe you're wasting your time with this one... You're going to have to litterally sit on it to hold it. There's no way to hook it to a desk for example, if my memory serves me right. So you won't have a comfortable and efficient position, cause you'll be driving with the wheel just above of your knees.
If you want a cheap wheel I think you'd better get an old force feedback USB wheel than wasting your time with an USB adaptor for the one you currently have. I'm using an MS Sidewinder Forcefeeback wheel and except for a small bug it's working fine. It's over 10 years old now I think, you might be lucky enough to find one for a cheap price. Or something similar. Still you'll need to make sure the drivers exist for your system (the Linux drivers for this wheel have been available for as long as I can remember and they even support force feedback now so all I had to do was to plug it in and calibrate it, but I'm not sure there are recent drivers for that oldie for M$ systems).

Seb.
Sorry it took me awhile to reply i had finals.

Yes the pedals to plug into the wheel. Now the question. is it even really worth buying that adapter for it? =)
I think it is. If it works with the adapter, you'll at least get the feeling of how it is like to play racing sims with a wheel. Think of it as buying a uber-cheapo wheel for 10 bucks, if you like the experience, you can get a better wheel later. If you dislike it (yes, some people prefer mouse or keyb), the only money you'll waste is those 10 bucks.

Most wheels under linux use the generic USB HID driver in conjunction with a generic force feedback driver.
