The online racing simulator
curious... how many licenced LFS racers out there?
anyone know how many licenced racers there are in total?
Somewhere between 30,000 and 50,000. Some are still S1, some are inactive, some people might have 2 licences (it's not unheard of).
so we dont know for sure?
i wrote an aritcle about lfs in february i think and at that point victor told me they had sold about 20000 s2 licenses. so probably we are about 25000-30000 i would say.
Nice income for the devs too :P
Actually, not really *that* much.

20000 S2 licenses = 20000 * 36€ = 720000€
10000 S1 licenses = 10000 * 18€ = 180000€

Total of 900000€, of which Scawen said 40 to 50% are lost due to taxes and other payment fees, so
900000€ * 60% = 540000€

Divided by three persons
540000€ / 3 = 180000€ per person

And all that was spread on the four years of development
180000€ / 4 = 45000€ per year

Still a respectable sum but far from the "OMG DEVS ARE RICH" some people like to make up. Of course everything is just speculation and I have no idea of the real values.

The game is developed for almost 6 years full time. I also believe at least Scawen has often worked much more than 40-50h a week.
Well, then it gets my point across even better
Roughly £30k a year. Just like a normal job really but with much more happy end users.

Although these are rough figures. Say their is a min of 15000 S1 and S2 licences sold, why have i never seen the "Racers Online" on the main LFS site ever go above 1000?

I totally agree and don't forget the "fixed charges" like DSL connection, Master server/forum hosting / and the internet traffic caused by that and the hardware and software etc.

I have 3

Well that's normal when you work at home. My mom works all the time too. SOme people just can't seem to stop working if they are in a hurry.
Quote from franky500 :I have 3

But why?
A way of supporting the devs, or just some other reason I can't possibly think of?

it's good to have few lfsw nicks after you've ruined your reputation with bad driving

lol

hmm... *me start thinking*
Quote from Tukko :it's good to have few lfsw nicks after you've ruined your reputation with bad driving

Lol.. I better get you a fair few then!!!.

Nah i just got some extra when a couple of m8s were sort of hinting they were skint. Handy to have though if i run out of unlocks when my comp plays up some times
lol yeah, devs arent that rich at all. I'd help'em out if I had the opportunity

And if we have 20 000 racers , why dont we have leagues with 1000 sign ups or smthn? now wouldnt that be fun?

We also have only a little over 2200 ppl who have uploaded at least 1 hotlap.
You could also have people that have bought a license and not raced online, maybe because of slow internet or such. Just cause they have sold that many doesnt mean they all race online
I remember talking about this at the meet last year with Bob, and we guessed it was something like about 20,000 or something. One thing's for sure, it's enough for Scawen to own an M3!
I used to think it was more than 100.000

BTW, are the devs still work in their "real" jobs or did LFS become their full time buisness?
Quote from LawVS :One thing's for sure, it's enough for Scawen to own an M3!

Em?

BTW, LFS is their full time job.
AFAIK it's their full time job. Scawen and Eric worked at Lionhead before, until they decided to do their own thing and make LFS. No idea about Vic and how/where they found him ().
would guess it's their full time job now.
from "afastest" (40-50H per week) just a guess too.
naa, i don't think it's their full time. It'd be really hard to live with that amount in america.

edit:OMG! it's their full time job. I would love that.

It's hard to live with 38000$ a year? Do you think Europe and especially the UK is cheaper?
