Gaming an Olympic Sport?
sure, it could give them higher ratings, but for gaming to be an olympic sport is just plain rediculous. The Olympics for real sports, and gaming isnt one LOL.

What a daft idea
That's pretty sad. I can see it now

"Oh, and the leading competator from the U.S. goes down with carpal tunnel syndrome!"
Olympics are for ATHLETES, which is defined as being skilled with strentgh, endurance, etc.... all for a physical sport of some kind.

Gamers probably only meet one of those traits.... endurance

I am all for it, but considering many ppl even argue whether snooker is a sport, I seriously doubt e-sport could be included in the Olympics in the near future. However I see it as a trend, some 50 years later I'm confident we will see it in the Olympics.
"an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition"

That is the definition I found for the term 'sport.' Now.. one could argue the fact that videogames require physical exertion, and there definately can be competition. I guess it is all how you look at the matter.

IMHO, the only video games that could be classed as sports are the ones which require full body movement. Something like the fighting game shown in the movie "The Island." (Great movie btw ) But, even that is a stretch.
I think it would be a start to have a dedicated, real public TV broadcast program or even a channel in the UK and other countries, for games (and I don't mean that shoddy PS2 review stuff but real gaming content from tournaments, industry innovations blah blah yadda yadda). I don't think either is going to happen any time soon.
There were art contests in Olympics in the old days, which arent physical sports.
Do the entrant nations have to build their own computers...?

"The British Quake player steps up, now have they solved the display problems as last time their very innovate graphics card could only manage to get 2fps when particles where onscreen, whilst the Russian valve computer mainframe showed the game in text form."

"And here comes the American with his laptop, easily outperforming the other machines he turned off one of his cpu cores in the opening round and still managed a smooth framerate."

"But this is the one we've been waiting for, it's the Serbian entry, they've built their own processor and on the entry form it is just detailed as "A.K." and nobody yet in the Olympic village has seen it. He's opening the box now, this is uB3rfRag!!one from Serbia and he's pulling out the Serbian machinery now."

"It's ... it's ... a loaded AK47. He's fragged the other players, quite literally".

hahaha
The original olympic events are based on caveman skills - hunting, running etc etc. This long jump is jumping over a river or quicksand, triple jump is the same but with goof boulders to land on mid way. Javelins are spears. 100m, 200m etc are either charging or retreating.

Ballroom Dancing isn't going get you a tiger for breakfast. Curling isn't going to stop your wife from being eaten by a snake. Gaming isn't going to help the caveman track elephants to their watering hole.
I fully support the concept of e-sports and think the media coverage should go up a bit. But olympia?
Yeah, extremely ridiculous idea. If the guy who tries to achieve this is really serious about this then illepall
thats sad

no offense, but if FPS shooters were there... an asian guy would win it. they have so much time on their hands and their homeowrk is so hard
checkers and chess arent in the olympics... are they? are any card games in the olympics? those have been around WAY longer than pc games.

What if you and your wife are ice fishing on a river, and suddenly a snake slithers out of nowhere intent on making dinner out of your woman. You're 100ft away and the only thing around is a semi-flat river rock - What do you do?! You curl the son-of-a-bitch!

As for ballroom dancing though, I completely agree.
if shooting a pathetic .22 handgun is an olympic sport then gaming could be too
olympics... with games.. what the hell lol

this is somewhat OT, but if anyone here knows of G4TV then you probably know about the show "Arena" on G4, where you can sign up your team to play some game and i dont know if you sign up an opponent or what, but you have a small competition; i can see 2 LFS teams on there battling it out :P

You talk sense.

If gaming becomes an olympic sport, then I'll shoot myself. It would make a mockery of what the games where about.

Quote :

The objective of the games is to unite the world in a common sporting event, all ignorantly paying homage to the unknown "spirit" with offerings and worship. All the nations and athletes are unknowingly participating in pagan rituals that have been used to worship Zeus. Paganism and pagan gods are receiving credibility especially through the opening and closing ceremonies.

Ok so maybe saying the modern games are devoted to the gods is going too far, but can you imagine what they are thinking! I bet the greeks never intended for computer games to be on the agenda.
