Why is it that I get a framerate of about 15 fps.
When I'm on a full grid of cars the framerate is crappy and i'm always trailing miles behind when I actually get a good screen where I can see where i'm going every second. It's really irritating because if it wasn't like that I could keep up with the pack in races and actually possibly get a great result other than the medium result I get by just people pitting in races and disconnecting.
I really want to find out why so I can have more fun on LFS.
Need more information.

What are your system specs - CPU, RAM, video card?

What are your video card driver settings - anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering?

What are your LFS settings - screen resolution, level of detail, texture size, hardware vertex shading etc.?
How the hell am I supposed to know all them.
how the hell would we know .. or even help you without that info?

go to start-run and type in dxdiag and it will give you all that info

anyways, in LFS, go to settings stuff, then go down to misc, and turn your dynamic LOD to 1

we dont really nee all that buddhabing said, all we need is how many ghz your computer is, what type of graphics card you have, and how much RAM you have

How the hell are people supposed to help you then. Put in some effort yourself, people aren't psychics.

well if you dont know about them, you dont have AA and AF on then.

go to start > run > type "dxdiag" > and click save all information and upload the dxdiag.txt as an attachment.
If you download CPUZ from http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php, and then run the following command
cpuz -file=report.txt

from a command line prompt (start > run, type cmd, press ok. use cd etc. to navigate to where you unzipped the exe. If for instance you downloaded and extracted to your desktop, when you're in the command prompt type "cd desktop" and press enter, then run the above command). You'll get a little text file called report.txt. Thats a good start for us.

It could be a combination of things, however; the CPU and the GFX card causing the slow down. I'd hazard a guess that its the GFX card, in this instance.

Edit: Either that, or use dxdiag (which is more comprehensive), as suggested above by DeKo
I'm doing it.

Anyway it's ~2.0GHZ
480MB RAM and I can't find where it says graphic card
in dxdiag go to the tab that says display and it tells on left side
approx. total memory: 32MB

let me highjack for a little!

ATM i have a AMD 64 4000+ and a 6600 GT 256 Mb (well, 2 but SLi isnt working!), and 1 Gb of generic PC3200 ram, should i upgrade the ram?

EDIT - Just seen your post, a 32 mb vid card may be the problem, tried updating your GFX drivers?
How do I do that. Does it include buying things or is it an update you can get from the internet (for free).
Yes, you'll need a new card. The good news is that LFS doesn't need an amazingly fast new one to run well. I got a substantial FPS upgrade switching from my old 64MB GeForce 440MX to a 128Mb FX5500 - it's nowhere near top of the line, but my rate no longer drops even when I've got everyone on screen.
Is it a laptop? From the CPU & GFX it kinda sounds like it.
No it isn't and there's probarbly no way, since it's not actually MY computer, that we'll be getting a new card so I guess i'll just have to live at the back of the grid still.

Big thanks to all the people who helped you all rule.

well, a driver update would still help a bit (maybe 10%, maybe more) if we knew what exactly it was
What do you do with driver updates. Can you get them from the internet? And what do you need to know.
#18 - Jakg
updating the drivers is a simple as removing the old ones by uninstalling them in control panel, then just installing the new ones, BUT if you have an IGP then they wont have driver updates (or do they? lol, not up on IGP's!), so tell us wht vid card you have! if your not sure, open LFS and go Settings>Graphics then look at the last bit, it is in a light box so it should stand out and copy what it says!
Umm....
after reading this thread, nuttyboy, pls dont attempt to update the video drivers yourself, especially since it is not your PC.

If you have a friend that has done this before, please ask them.

The last thing you want is a PC that wont work and you dont know how to fix it.

Not taking the piss, just trying to stop a potential disaster.

Good point ^. It sounds like he doesn't know a whole lot about computers and it may be a bad thing for him to do updates (no offense, nutty boy).

Since we're talking 32 mb of video, go to the LFS options > graphics and set "use compressed skins" to yes. Then set "half texture size" to yes.

In the misc options you will see "Multiplayer speedup option". Set to yes, then move the slider that appears fully to the right. Then move the slider for "Dynamic LOD reduction" fully to the right as well (as said already).

That should help you out. Also, it could be a good idea to have all the options in the graphics that have "mirror" selectable to set them at all if you are still having problems after trying the above. Just leave the "disable rubber" set to mirror.

Good luck
Change the screen resolution to a lower res, and allways use the 'all you can see is the front wheels' view. Make sure you have ALL the graphic options turned to a minimum and then you can turn back on anything you want later if you find you can spare the fps. Oh, and put a fan on your computer to cool it, that raises my fps by a consistent 15 fps. I play on a pos laptop by the way.
well.. dont have to start off with a lower resolution, just start lowering some options, limit your FPS to some amount (with slow drivers, it will get jumpy so..) and just go from there

oh, and if that computer is an Hewlett Packard... then your screwed lol; HP's cant do much at all, until lately where non-AGP video cards have been released
My computer is an Iqon or something. My scanner is a HP but i'm guessing that has nothing to do with it.
I've done the things people told me to (apart from the driver update and btw for all the people who said no offence, no offence taken, i'm crap with computers and i wasn't planning on doing it myself anyway.)
I'm going to go to a packed server (probarbly oval junkies(god first time i'll ever go there)) to check if it worked.
WOW it's such an awful atmosphere in there. They're all angry noobs racing around in a circle.
Anyway, It helped a tiny bit, I know can see where i'm going every 2 seconds instead of 5 and at the start of a race I can hear the engine slightly, unlike before where I couldn't at all.
So thanks guys but it's still not improved it much.
what fps are you getting now

also.. sit offline and mess with your settings and try to get it high before you test it online; it makes it easier for you, and probably everyone else trying to race
