GFX card advice
Hi,

I'm thinking about getting a new gfx card. Specs right now:

AMD Athlon XP 3000+
512 MB DDR-SDRAM
GeForce 3 Ti200

With this system I run a resolution of 1024x768 and get fps around 60-70 which is fine with me.
BUT: I can't use any AA oder AF, as this slows down the fps too much.

So I am looking for a new gfx card, that would allow me to keep current resolution and fps (although a little bit more wouldn't hurt) AND use maximum or at least very high AA und AF settings.

I was thinking about a 6600 GT but I am not sure whether a cheaper one wouldn't do the trick as well. Don't want to spend more money than I have to. Apart from LFS I'm playing next to no other games, so the performance for this software is decisive.

Any advice or experience from users with similar systems would be appreciated. I'm not looking for a specific manufacturer oder model, just the general class would be enough.
Noise on the other hand is an issue, so if anyone can point me to a model that is fast enough and quiet (at least in 2D-Mode), that would be nice.

My previous specs:
Athlon XP 3000+
512MB PC3200
GF4 4800

Current specs:
same CPU
same memory
GF 6800GT 128MB

Basically, a GF4 isn't going to cut it either, and the GF5 (aka GF FX) really isn't worth buying unless you're absolutely sure you're not going to be playing any DirectX 9 based games (basically any game made since and including HL2 and Doom3, except LFS, for now anyway). I get no performance hit by turning on AA and AF to the max on my 6800GT 128MB. A 6600GT should do the trick quite nicely.
Thanks Forbin, that was exactly the kind of information I was looking for!

yes i would also recommend the 6600GT.

i run a P4 3.2 and the difference on the 6600gt, between no AA/AF and 8x AA/16x AF is absolutely nothing. unstoppable card in LFS, crank up the settings and off you go!

2800xp here.

had a GF 4200 Ti before and played 1280x1024 with no AA whatsoever.

Got a great deal on a Asus X850 XT though, and now I play with 6AA / 16AF and get even a little more frames. I e.g. do have the mirror enabled now, which cost me too many frames with the GF4.

I still hope that LFS will become more gfx card dependent, though :>
