I have watched the replay posted by gener al and it made me sad; narrow streets , ramps , people wrecking each other...
If LFS goes this way i wont even bother trying the patch.
I really enjoy Iracing more and more even with its overpriced policy.
Kev, I'm thinking that SimRacing might not be the career for you.
Have you tried those new Pornstar sims? They make you feel almost as if you're actually inside the fake, beachball titted blonde moaning like a dying kitten.
Let me know where you can find an proper series for a total cost of less than a grand (including car, fuel, tyre and everything. and kart doesn't count). Then I'd happily ditch iRacing or LFS.
The truth of the matter is, iRacing is much better than LFS. Anyone denies that either has never tried iRacing or is an idiot. Whether you can justify the price is another matter. If you buy a one year subscription is only a couple bucks a month. I spend a lot more than that on drinks when going out with friends every week. If you have the money, iRacing is definitely the way to go.
netKar Pro's physics is very decent, but the small online competition is a bit of a letdown. You can pretty much forget about rFactor until the rFactor 2 is released.
so if you have a couple bucks to spare, then iRacing is the way to go (even without buying any extra tracks or car, it's worth it). Otherwise, stick with LFS.
For me, it wasn't the cost (although to be constantly buying tracks and cars to keep up with "the crowd" was always going to annoy me) but the cost combined with the limitations, not being able to race exactly what I want and exactly when I want. iRacing requires a dedication of time and often great patience, and a quite serious approach that I just don't have anymore (if I ever did).
wait for the wheel patch so that when you plug in your DFGT for example, it isnt jittery/overly sensitive... like a mini with its suspension raised 7 inches and running + 45 camber.
then and only then is lfs useable let alone racable
You should try reading, he said "half". So $275, so $91 per day. $10 an hour, or £6 per hour (UK minimum wage funnily enough), 9 hours a day. Easy.
iRacing is a hobby. Nobody signs up to iRacing and buys 100% content, you buy 3 or 4 tracks and a car which lets you do a full season. All types of gaming are a waste of money, we all spend £200 on G25s, £500 on PC's to play. We don't need to do it, but we do because it's fun.
Is it really? So someone on minimum wage who doesn't live with mother can afford it? I doubt it. On your wage you pay for all your bills, your rent, and any other outgoings you have, internet/car insurance. After all these in a month, you aint even gonna afford one payment for iracing. Where as, LFS, or rFactor, you save up the 30£ to buy it, then, wow, you have it. FOREVER. Nobody will take ti away from you , no matter how broke you get.
Unfortunately in this global economy the wages are not equal around the world. Say you spend 550$ to get all of the content (if your not into both oval and road you can easily halve this expense) after this initial spending splurge you can choose a longer subscription which at its lowest can cost as little as $6 a month.
If you can't put up that much then unfortunately iRacing is out of your range.
I also would like to 'own' the content but in life everything is not free. The quality and work put into iRacing is worth at least the $6 a month. And there's always the chance to re-subscribe and have all the content you've previously purchased. Of course new additional content will cost more if you want to have it.
With the euro / usd conversion I pay more each time I have a lunch in my workplace cafeteria than the monthly fee iRacing costs. A couple bags of chips costs the same... it's essentially peanuts.
I have an iRacing subscription, but I still prefer LFS. Reasons:
1. Hate scheduled pick-up racing.
2. Hate the iR brakes. Some say LFS's are unrealistic... that "you can just mash them to the floor without locking up!"... but in most reasonable racing sets that I've used, you have to watch yourself with lockups unless you want a puncture at the end of your stint. LFS's brakes feel a lot truer to my experience both with road cars and with racing (albeit karts in my case).
3. Hate the lack of driver swaps. No endu racing.
4. Hate the incident points for minor contact or minor offs. A point beaten to death by this time but still bears mentioning.
5. Still far less of a "team-friendly" sim than LFS. At this point in my sim-racing career, being able to pursue results as a team is everything to me, and without proper team support a sim loses a lot of appeal.
There's definitely a lot to like about iR (and the rate at which it's improving is great), and a lot of areas that LFS desperately needs to improve... but for the moment LFS still serves my particular needs a lot better.
Ben: I've had an iRacing sub for the past year (expires next month.. i won't renew I don't think), and I've been able to race about 5 times. There's either an hour to wait before I can join a race in a car I want, or I'm too low a license. I did more races yesterday in LFS, coming from not having anything installed.
LFS is just more friendly to just.. race and drive in. Drop into a server running a combo you like. Ask someone for a set (most will share), and you're off and racing. Turn on the racing line for a few laps to get your bearings on braking points, and then you're good to go.
Plus the amounts of times I've been crashed out of a race in iRacing versus LFS is insane. Most people that race with me know that I'm a pretty relaxed racer (I don't try to make impossible passes. I'm patient for a safe place to pass and try to give space when I am inside someone), but iRacing it seems that people either are so overly cautious because of safety rating that they don't try to defend at all, or if they do defend they're insane about it.
I just wish I was back into a LFS team that was active as playing LFS the few hours this past weekend really made me remember how much I love to race... even though I am god-awful slow.
Love the iR brakes. I haven't used my G25 set for a long time so maybe the Fanatec Clubsport loadcell brake pedal has spoiled me. With the pressure sensitive brake I can hit the braking spots very reliably. What is excactly your problem with the brakes in iRacing? For me what I would hate if I wouldn't be able to lock the tires at any speed (for that reason even normal road cars have ABS to give the driver a chance to steer). You should always be able to lock your brakes (unless brake fade).
My problem is typically locking up the rear brakes going into a corner and spinning wildly. This happens somewhat frequently in most cars, even slower ones like the Solstice and MX-5.
I've adjusted the brake sensitivity and all of that in-game but it still seems ridiculously hypersensitive to me.
It's funny Ben, becuase I have the reverse issue coming to LFS. Maybe it's from driving a real car, but when I brake in LFS, I rarely go above about 50% brake position (which is why I'm so slow! ).. but it's a bad habit I got from playing iRacing even a little bit.
I really wish I could get into some leagues, but the barrier to entry is too high for me.
Really people having a little bit of fun
And I would not call anyone a "Wrecker" in that Replay at all, Most were new to the layout some hadn't played LFS for a longtime.
I have had one negative response "online racing" with that layout (that particular racer didnt even drive) and one person here (Yourself).
The Majority mostly commented on how much fun they have had racing there in fact.
And if you had not noticed that is the only way to access that Area.
But I do Agree this is not what LFS is all about, LFS has a very pure racing spirit, you will find this in the leagues and servers.
But what LFS does have is a diversity and long may it live.
Thought the thread would be locked by now, pleased to see it hasn't even been moderated. One of the best things about LFS is its forum.
I don't know of a "cruise community" in any other sim, and this update is tailor-made for the only activity that still survives in LFS - cruising.
Yeah I'm fairly certain that hiPricing won't work for me either, I can't be that strictly scheduled about racing (which is why I only ever entered one LFS league and had to leave half-way through it) and I don't like the way it's funded.
That too.
LFS is still my favourite sim, and I've tried them all, and I'm sorry Dave if you feel that I'm jumping on some LFS-hate bandwagon but it ****s me off to see energy spent on an update designed to fix all the issues that are on the wish lists of cruise server operators when there's been a physics update waiting to happen since 2008.
Yes It is quite liberal at times but sometimes people tend to try push the boat out too far I feel.
Yes I am now looking at you.
I think you are really showing your lack of awareness of what is happening within LFS Community.
At least we agree on one thing here.
I don not see it as jumping on the bandwagon of hate as you so affectionately put it, most of what you say is simply, seems spiteful.
That coupled with a skewed perception of what LFS should be in your head, and what in reality it actually is.
Be thankful for what your given, that's one thing I learnt very early in Life.
And even more thankful for what you have.
