Me too, what's the big deal here? Should Bastille Day or St Patrick's Day etc also attract ridicule?
The topic starter has wished "happy independance day" to his fellow countrymen. Can't we just let them discuss the topic at hand? This does not have to become a political discussion.
I wasn´t trying to offend anyone or make it a political discussion. I do accept different cultures and I do wish americans a happy independance day.
It´s just that there are so many different holidays around the world that it wouldn´t make sense celebrating all of them in this forum. And it wouldn´t be fair just to celebrate one country´s holiday. But if you´re all supporting these kinds of threads maybe we should get a "Happy holidays" sub-forum.
well.. it was an american that started it; atleast it wasnt somewhere random like france or some strange place that doesnt celebrate it lol that would be kind of strange (nothing intended upon france)
i think that christmas, easter, and independence days are fine to celebrate (well.. i mean, we have celebrated christmas and easter each yaer on this forum)
owell.. tomorrow will be mighty fine thats for sure
Pssst hey KiDCoDEa, can we maybe have a 'happy holiday' thread to go along with the birthday one? It would be interesting to see what holidays are celebrated around the world.
If you aren't an american and you feel offended for some reason, then just f***ing ignore the thread. Saying "Happy Independance day" does not break the rules of the forum. However, discriminating against someone because they are American IS against the rules of the forum.
Yay! we got a HUGE BBQ coming on to us this afternoon! My neighbor and some of his friends and the entire part of my family is joining! it'll be great! cant wait to burn rubbers with my nephews in some rental cars!
funny how some people are so sad as to take this thread and use it as an opportunity to bash america. its good to be honest about your feelings and i hope you all continue to reveal your true colors sotospeak
I'll be honest. Your intimidation technique is lacking substance to the debate at hand. I don't doubt you have much knowledge of the subject. As I said before, you are correct in that they aren't forcing anyone into Christianity- I never said they did...however debating the existance of references to God in our government documents is undeniable. And currently they are trying their best to remove the references. And for the record, forcing something is completely different than indoctrinating something. Oh, and also, if you taught your kids all the verses of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" perhaps you missed verse 4-
Our fathers' God, to thee,
author of liberty, to thee we sing;
long may our land be bright
with freedom's holy light;
protect us by thy might, great God, our King.
which could prove your knowledge of american patriotic songwriting invalid. So is your argument on americans with religious freedom. I'm american, I enjoy religious freedom very much.....Argument busted.
I'm not trying to be mean about this guys, but if you give me weak arguments in an intimidating way, what is being proved, discussed, or what point is being made? Let's all remain calm! haha
founding fathers of what? you mean to say the founding fathers of our country aren't the founding fathers of our government? The moment our country came in existance is when we declared our government...aka decided upon by our founding fathers.
Ahh okay whatever. I'm not trying to intimidate you. If you feel intimidated, look within. I originally posted to indicate that you'd made an error in the way you phrased the birth and purpose of your nation. I maintain that assertion.
You haven't busted my argument. I've made little or no effort to make argument. There's nothing to bust. You said "I don't know if you've ever read..", and so I indicated that I had. Since you're by no stretch the first person to assume that, because my location is "Yorkshire, UK", that I don't know much about the intricacies of US government, or the history of the US. I'm even a member of a Revolutionary War re-enactment society, based in Wisconsin (I fight for the colonials). I'm not trying to suggest that I know more than you (though you seem to be doing). You were simply headed down a path that was going to make you look a little dumb if you'd pursued it, so I did you a favour and pointed it out. It's your choice if you don't want to take a hint.
I don't care if you believe you have religious freedom or not. I laugh that you think I'm trying to say that you haven't. You may have. I don't care much to think on it. But not everyone in the US has religious freedom. There's no point in arguing that they have, because you'll just make yourself look more silly.
Now I'm dropping out of this thread. Funnybear, I did tell you so
Well, we have the usual easter, christams etc, like you and we also have the queens birthday (I am only 15 so i don't know if it has a special name ) Any other English people know of any???
And if is this makes others feel better, the British did come back in 1812 and burn down our Capitol. Which we appreciate, as the Capitol built after that is much, MUCH better. Good show chaps and all that rot, harumph harumph harumph. Dont take me seriously on that, please.
Gonna have a few friends over, BBQ with burgers, chicken wings and drumsticks.
And drink Bass Pale Ale. I love my country, but DAMN! our beer sucks.
And thank you to ones in this thread from other countries who give warm tidings. Your countrymen and women immagrated here, and made our country great. Your cultures and ideas and ideologies made our country what it is today.
LOL maybe we can get a server modded to play Toby Kieth songs during races....yuck!
WE had this big festival for the Forth celebrated here... it was sponsored by British Petroleum.
BTW, we celebrate Cinco de Mayo and Fiestras Patras here. Those are Mexican holidays.
You know, we got world leaders threatening Nuclear action, Others that doubt the Holocaust, and Still others that steadily trample on the rights of it's citizens, yet the world still wants to just go off on some dumb redneck.
And this country constantly, constsantly gets bashed for it's socioeconomic policies by people living in countries with bad employment figures..... and then they get all upset cause we don't care about that silly game they play where you kick a ball around. They don't like it cause we only race in a circle or a straight line, we don't "measure" things the way we do...
If we built a big dome and cut ourselves off from them, they'd prolly whine about that too.
England celebrates St.Georges Day as a national day.
Scotland celebrates St.Andrews Day as a national day.
Wales...um...remind me someone....daffodil day?
Obviously Ireland has St.Patricks.
The only annoying thing about these national days is that they aren't made into holidays, which I think they should be for there respective nations.
