BMW M5 fake engine sounds? Alternate applications?
Just saw this posted up on Autoblog. Apparently the new 2012 BMW M5 has some kind of engine sound played through the stereo of the car. Not sure exactly what to think of it (I guess it depends on the motives/needs for such a system?) but its brings me to a question:

They claim it gives a perfect audible indication of the engine load. Obviously that is not possible with pre-recorded engine samples (as most of the hardcore racers here know). Do you think their system uses an on-the-fly generation system akin to LFS? If so, do you think their system will provide a better, more detailed and realistic sounding experience than what LFS offers?

In the event that this is some kind of proprietary generation system, what are the chances you think that some of the research could find its way into other consumer outlets (LFS, for instance)?
haha, will you be able to get different packs for it, so you can sound like other cars?

Tractor sound yo?
It's a direct recording, so unless YOU PUT a tractor engine in, it won't sound like one. Anyway, I think its a sweet idea, it means you can have road noise cancelled out, but when you want to , still have the engine sound as if your ear is on it. I like this idea!
Or more accurately, it sounds like this:

I'm getting the E60 next year, then straight down the Chav shop to make it sound like this:

Trouser stiffening.

Playing stuff through the stereo is not new - it's usually used to cancel out wind roar etc. The new McLaren doesn't use the stereo to "emotionally enhance" the driving experience, but they did change the design to naturally filter more noise into the cabin.

only get the first year E60,or if your wallet is huge,go ahaed and get the later ones.

btw acura uses some sound system to reduce engine noise

Why do you have to simulate engine noise, when you can just put a mic into the engine bay?

Cos the engine sound you hear in the cabin is usually a combination of engine noise, exhaust note and induction noise, which you cant really pick up with a mic in the engine bay..

You probably didn't get the point.

Whether more appropriate or not, BMW is using some kind of generated or pre-recorded sound like most games do. It says in there that it plays a sound through your stereo that is pitched depending on what the ECU says the engine is doing.
In Pimp My Ride - they have installed such system to a car multiple times. Nothing new.

At one point of view im curious and want to hear how "real" does it actually sound but in the other end its just plain stupid.
