thats about all i know, gforce4 or 3 rings a bell?
also i shutdown every other running program (norton, pop up stopper, email etc etc) but still the same
i cant go into servers with too many people cos its glitchy and as soon as someone goes close to me the same thing (sometimes ok with 1 person but more than 1 and its a joke )
Perhaps its because of your CPU.
I ve got a 1.4Ghz and have annoying Lags everytime someone Pits or leaves Pit.
I ve read that LFS needs more CPU-Power than Gafik(card)power so I believe its the CPU.
But perhaps people with bigger CPU experience the "Pit-Lag", too?
... btw I ve 1GB Ram so it cant really be a Ram-Problem
P.S. My Ping is about 45ms on most Servers I join.
Paulw are you sure you are suffering from LAG? Or perhaps just very low frame rates?
LAG: cars disappearing turning into (LAG: ) clouds, cars jerking side to side or generally all over the road. game still runs at a smooth speed.
Low frame rate: game runs constantly in a jerky or choppy motion. other cars appear to be racing normally, just the game is hard to play as the motion is jerky. slowing down as more cars are on screen, then speeding up as less are on screen.
To find out the ping of the server; on the LFS server list there is a ping column. anything lower than 150ms is GOOD!
so what sounds more like your problem Paulw?
at a guess i would say you probably just have low frame rates on the start line. your CPU is most likely the cause of this. you can lower the graphic detail to try speed things up a bit, and if you do indeed have a geforce 3 or close to, try turning on the HVS on the graphics tab.
ahh well thats certainly makes it a bit easier to understand, thankyou
Yes i believe it may well be low fps in that case, i only very occasionally suffer with the cars dissapearing with a lag time above, its definatly jerky. Other cars do jump about a bit from time to time but mainly its very jerky, causes me to crash a lot when otheres are near. but runs fine when on my own or not too near a crowd, its like someone is pressing pause and releasing it very quickly.
as for ping, i tried different servers with varying ping rates, even some with 45 were still the same, im guessing this also leans towards low fps?
can you explain what ping is and maybe briefly its rate's importance?
I'll have to turn the fps rate on to see what im getting, can you give me an idea as to what it a decent frame rate??
I have been playing LFS since demo 0.1 days so im not exactly a noob, im just to a computer wiz if ya know what i mean
I thankyou for your patience and your helpful advice in advance, it cant be easy answering non computery type people's questions
If you turned FPS on, then just look at it sometimes... everything under 25 is visible, under 10 is even unplayable... A value over 30 is recommended imo...
The eye sees at about 30 FPS, but can notice differences between 60 and 70 FPS. Ideally for the health of your eyes 40+ is usually what you're aiming for
Ping is the time taken, in microseconds, for data to go from your PC to the server and back again. The lower the time the better Ideally for LFS you want a ping of sub-100 imho.
The best way to check if its lag or low FPS is to either turn the FPS counter on, or see if you get the same results in single player and multiplayer
Edit: My FPS values are for non-interlaced display.
yup mate that's just low fps, your cpu would be the limiting factor on your pc i would say
the ping doesnt have anything to do with how fast the game will run, but rather just how smoothly the other cars will be racing.
let's say for example if we were both on a server, and it said your ping to the server was 200ms. if you were watching me speeding down the straight and i hit the brakes.. in theory you would see my car braking 200ms (.2 of a second) after i ACTUALLY hit the brake pedal in my house it's how quickly the data from the other cars is getting to your LFS. (this is without considering the packet frequency setting, im not even gonna go into that! )
so you'd want the ping figure to be as low as possible. 45 (.045 of a second) is a great ping and plenty for LFS. anything lower than 150 is fine.
Many people will give you alot of different answers here i'll break it down as what i reckon you need for good racing:
DESIRED: 60 Frames Per Second or higher
world record holders etc would probably say this many is what you'd need. i guess the faster and smoother the game runs, the better.
PREFERRED: 30 Frames Per Second
in my opinion 30 fps is comfortable and probably the amount you'd want to be racing with.
MINIMUM: 15 Frames Per Second
racing with 15fps would not be fun at all, but there were stories of quite competitive racers who's machines only did around 15fps. sure you can still race with the game running this slowly, however it's like you say "someone pressing pause on and off all the time". less frames means you cant actually drive as smoothly, less time to react to things happening in the game etc.
Since I have set my "Dynamic LOD reduction" to max, my lagging/fps problems
are nearly gooooone.
-only thing about it, is that sometimes the other cars looks strangely boxy,
when many cars on track. -at start f.ex.
-but thats better than a jumpy field of 20 cars.
That's exactly what LOD reduction means. When the program has to do a lot of work (i.e. when there are many other cars near) it just simplifies the 3d models so it's less of a hassle. That translates to strange boxy cars, but as you said at least it keeps your FPS up.
One more technical thing. Do you have motherboard drivers installed? I forgot to do that when i freshened up my windows and because that limits communication between CPU and Graphics card and such it resulted in the same problem you are having. When I had installed my MoBo drivers my FPS shot up by about 20.
I'm gonna disagree with you Takumi_Project.d - the higher the FPS the better in racing sims because the distance traveled by the car between frames is much smaller, which gives you better reaction times to corners and danger imho.
I join a server with 10 racers, FPS was averaging 15 sometimes up to 20-23 but lots of times down around 9-15
tried a single player and it was up and around 25-30 (although i only drove to the first corner)
Can you give me some tips on what to adjust and where to improve this, i'll try what i can understand obviously im going to need to upgrade my pc eventually but which parts need changing?
isn't that pretty much what i was saying? 15fps doesnt give you enough reaction time... 30 is preferred and 60 or higher is what the top racers aim for/wanna have?
