Sorry - I should have named this thread Freelancer. That's two threads in a row the title of which I have cocked up!

Started playing this game last night for the first time. I have to admit to being a hardcore driving game nut but every now and again I find another genre that I enjoy. I highly recommend this game.

Anyone else played this game? Wondered if anyone had some tips for me?
is that the space flight sim game? I heard it was meant to be very good.

Yeah - that's the one. You fly round different planetary systems on missions to protect convoys and stuff like that. You buy and sell weapons and cargo. It's got a very good storyline to it in the single player mode so is easy just to play and learn.

Haven't tried multiplayer yet as I know I'm just gonna get blown out of the sky in seconds until I can dog fight better.

I am just reading the IGN review on it, it managed to rate very high with a 9.2 rating. I remember playing this game few years back when my mate lend it to me. It was quite a good game but i never really got into it. Online apparently it has cooperative mode which i guess could be a joy playing with the right people. I find myself quite often going back and replaying those older titles. Ive recently been playing Monolith's Blood a dos game which kicked ass back in the day!!

wil see if i dont have the cd laying around somewhere...

For all your Freelancer needs - www.lancersreactor.com

Theres a nice downloadable app that tells you the best prices/locations for weapons/goods etc. Very handy when you get to the point of just doing trade runs to save for a new ship.

Also, try not to get on the bad side of the Corsairs. They sell the best ships but you can't buy them if you're their enemy.

I'm going to try X3 shortly, hopefully it'll be as good as Freelancer.
Quote from thisnameistaken :Is it basically like Elite? Another game I loved when I was a nipper!

Are we talking ZX Spectrum here?

Then yes I suppose it's A BIT like elite if somewhat more advanced.

Thanks for the link - just what I need.
ohh please let me know what X3 is like, I played X2: The Threat, didnt complete it but thought the game was rather poor, it doesnt compare to Freelancer at all.

edit* did someone mention the ZX SPECTRUM ahh the memories, was a blast! My dad still has it in fully working order.

It's a little bit different, but another game you may like is Freespace 2. It's a classic space combat game.

I'm currently playing through X2 and will probably also buy X3.
anyone here play Starlancer? another game which is worth going back to, It was more combat space sim though.
<3 Elite, and EVE: Online....damn. I'd just about given up that addiction and someone always makes me think of it :s Never tried Freelancer though.

Its the whole social aspect of it, plus when you've got past the grinding stage and have a reasonable ship, it can be fun to jump through low-sec space, harrass haulers by jumping into their roid belts and then jumping out again, see mates, in the middle of space, who parted ways a few months back, run a few missions, do some ratting, etc. Theres quite a bit to the RPG-aspect of EVE, although the skills system, regardless of how advanced you are, is very very grindy (2 months for the next level, for instance - but then you dont have to be logged on to train) I suppose the best way to describe EVE is Elite with multiplayer notepad

What can I say? I'd really love to have my own ship, in space just bumming around (how nerdy is that)
I played EVE for a while earlier this year but didn't have a whole lot of money at the time. Now I do and have been considering going back. I have a corp waiting for me that thought I'd be back in June or July...
as one guy here (i think it was nuse not sure though) probably already figured out when i used the good ol soon™ im an old space sim fan (others might have figured it out from my nickname)

so anyway i player freelancer and got bored pretty soon after playing through the storyline ... after completing it youre hated in most sectors and youve got a pretty unimpressive ship ... plus i never got to the point where you start to like controlling the ship with the mouse

Lucky bugger
played freelancer too, imo the best space sim since elite and privateer. very good single player story and a good online mode. worth playing.

i tried x3 too and i didnt like it, also i just finished darkstar one, but its far from freelancer quality too, playable though.
Misplaced Optimism.
Another great sim in the genre : HardWar. (Elite on a moon) Old game, (1998) but was updated by one of the devs about a year ago. (!)

Be careful, like LFS, once you are in, "say goodbye to your social life"™
Need to lend my support to the old hardwar tis a great game imho. (and I got 1k posts on zedo's forum :X). Hardwar has everything, a great story line, great music, easy to control, a proper economy (which you can cause a crash on if you like). All contained in a small space (which takes 20mins to fly around realtime :X)

Freelancer is cool, lacking a few things compared to elite imo, no joystick control , and nothing really to do after the story line, trading pretty much sucks imo. But all in all a good game. If you like dogfighting then IWar2 is alot better.
Freespace 2 is freely distributed, you can easily find it on the net.
I think there are updates to its graphics, or something like that, but I might be confusing it with System Shock.

HOLY THREAD REVIVAL BATMAN !!!!!!!!1111111111111

Recently released is a demo of a Freespace 2 mod based on Battlestar Galactica the series.
PC and Mac versions are out, Linux version expected shortly.

Beyond the Red Line is a stand-alone total conversion for the award-winning Freespace 2 released by Volition and Interplay for the PC. It is based on the popular new tv-show Battlestar Galactica. No, not the one from the 70s.

Beyond the Red Line is a stand-alone conversion and will not require Freespace 2. All you need for playing will be included in the download.

The game is made by fans for the fans, no profit is being made from any part of the project. Altough we could use some pizzas and coke to keep our mortal bodies running.

Multiplayer will feature such gameplay modes as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, Gauntlet missions and possibly some coop missions.

I tried it out last night and its great, didn't have time to try online though.

Blimey - haven't played Freelancer for ages. Got bored of it in a few weeks, Can't believe this phoenix has risen from the flames!
I'm a bit bored and feeling spammy.
This is the most useful post I could come up with I'm afraid :o

It's a pretty fun game though, only a couple of hundred meg to d/l as well.

Yeah - I'd definately recommend it. I'm sure I'll return to it sometime soon but I think I got a bit stuck on one of the stages of the story.

I think you misread, what I'm on about today is a standalone BSG game based on the Freespace 2 engine. I just posted it in here as it seemed to belong.

Probably should have created a new thread really

Reckon it fits in this thread quite nice.

Maybe I'll try that instead sometime.
