What do you mean with " In dds " ? Didn't understand it at all , im sorry :P

DDS files are Directdraw Surface texture files. You cannot open them without a specific plugin to a painting software, which seems like you are using paint.

I'd recommend getting GIMP, and using a specific plugin for DDS files, from here:
http://code.google.com/p/gimp-dds/

or use DDS converter 2.1.

There is also plugin for Photoshop.

Just install Paint.NET, no need for anykind of plugins ...
