Wheel suggestions/questions
Hi,

Ok, heres the deal, I have been racing LFS for many years now, plus various other sims and racing games, and in all that time I have never used a wheel, I always use an analogue pad.

Althought I would say I am an average driver, I am thinking a wheel may take me to a different level, so my questions are this....

1) Would a wheel improve my times.

2) What wheel would you suggest to buy.

3) Would a "driving force pro" work on a PC aswell as a PS2?.

Sorry if these have been answered before.....

Dan.
1) Initially, no, you'll be slower, until you get used to it, after which time you will probably be a bit quicker.

2) Although I've never tried it, I believe the DFP is currently the one to get.

3) Yep, works on both.

Also, I'd like to mention that regardless of how the wheel affects your times, it simply makes the game that much more immersive. Eventually you'll wonder how you ever played without one.
There are basicly two options: Logitech MOMO Racing (the black one) and Logitech Driving Force Pro. The third option would be Logitech MOMO Force (the red one) but it's not manufactured anymore. If you can get it somewhere take it! It's generally considered the best racing wheel ever made.

I have MOMO Racing so I would recommend it. I've never used Driving Force Pro.

Is there any difference between the red and black MOMO wheel? (other than the obvious fact that one is red and one is black  )
apparently lol

i have heard very few problems with this "red" momo wheel which i still have no idea what its true name is

however, the momo racing is definetly a worthy investment, im comming up on 2 years with mine and the only serious problem i have had is a broken sequencial shifter (thats what happens when you get mad playing NFSU when your 15 lol)
but since it has 2, i just moved the springs over and it was fixed (only one spring broke for some odd reason)

however, dont let these "my momo racing pedals are broken" get to you; the momo pedals are really great, and if anything happens to them, take it apart, make sure the switches are in their pots, and get rid of dirt and hair and whatnot that somehow got into the pedals
(and/or what i have been thinking about is getting some thing foam stuff and putting it in the pedal slots so hair and dust doesnt get into it when its just sitting)

i have however tried the DFP, although it is unrealistically TINY (i believe smaller than the momo racing) however, if you reeeeeeeeally want to put up with all that 900 degree radii and can afford it, i really suggest it (and if you have GT4 too) it can be quite fun on GT4 (only thing is when i was at a store with it, it didnt have FF on) so im not sure how the FF handles but im sure its quite well
and if you want the DFP, i suggest waiting, because rumor has it that logitech is making a newer DFP and surely when they release it, the original DFP will lose its high price

all in all, both the momo racing and DFP are great wheels
momo: great for computer racing, is handled by almost all games and is quite sturdy although a pain to take apart if the pedals get hair or dust in them
DFP: great for PS2 and LFS.. although i dont believe many games handle its 900 degree turning radii and also im sure a burden when the pedals have problems
Thanks for that

I was going to get a Red MOMO but they were too expensive, so I just got a black one off ebay...
I'd say get DFP. I've had it for 4-5 months now, and with LFS, it's great!

You already made your choice (which wasn't a bad choice, I have black MOMO too) but just in case: red MOMO has leather wheel, a lot better better pedals and it has more "professional" feel all around in it. It's full name is Logitech MOMO Force Feedback Wheel (the black one is Logitech MOMO Racing Force Feedback Wheel - a bit confusing). Black MOMO is a kind of cheaper version of it. I think the only bad thing in red MOMO is that the red colour doesn't look good on a computer desk.
Another point is the Red Momo is discontinued. You can only get it used on E-Bay or something. And it is expensive compared to a new Momo Black or DFP. The DFP is around $100 USD and Momo Black is around $70. I see a Red Momo on e-bay right now. The current bid is $21, reserve not met and the "Buy it Now" price is $255. They are rare, they are good, therefore they are expensive.

Here's the link to see it on e-bay:

Yup, I just didn't mention it again because I already said it in previous post.

PS. An year ago my friend sold his red MOMO. He sold it for 30 euros(!!!). He just said he needed money and quickly. illepall
I was close to getting a Red MOMO the other day, it was £41 until the last minute, but 3 people bid £80 in the last seconds, I only bid £65
My black was only £45 anyway, no doubt it will be better than my sidewinder...
I got my wheel today, and I have to say I don't really like it, I've only had a few atempts with it, but it is horrible to drive with. Hopefully it is because of my settings, I've had some trouble setting up the forcefeed back, can someone recommend some settings for it?
When I first switched from no-FF to black MOMO I was also struggling with the wheel... But after few days I started beating my old PBs.

I didn't set any special settings, just lowered the FF strenght to 50%.
I've put set the strength to just 10% and I still can't drive it. The biggest problem I have is counter steering, keeping the car going straight out of a corner is ridiculous. If the arse end swings out one way I can control it (sometimes), but when it snaps back and goes the other way I have no hope.

I have FF-strenght set to 50% and increased the strenght of the wheel-turning.
Of course this makes it very hard to prohibit the car from counter-swinging, but it's just the same in a real car. At least with non-hydraulic-powered-steering, but who uses that in racing anyway?
Rule of thumb: If you can drive the car with one hand for longer than 5 minutes, it's unrealistic.

Well, it's about time there Cropsy . Haven't seen ya in the servers for a while. Keep going with the wheel, you'll get use to it. In the case of a Momo or DFP, try setting the spring strength up (not the centering spring). I have mine at 138%. That gets rid of the occillation that may be the reason you miss the countersteering. With a good setup now, my Momo countersteers practically by it's self.

dunno what wheel you have but its probably a dfp so the huge range of the wheel prevents you from giving it a strong and fast countersteer

the solution is simple: set the forces pretty strong (but not too strong so you can feel what the car does but the ff doesnt prevent you from turning the wheel fast) and than force yourself to countersteer (ie drift a little)
for starters id recomend you to use a rather soft setup so the body roll gives you a good indication on what forces are acting on your car (like bobs road going or easyrace setups ... a little more lock on the diff and you should have a fine setup for your training sessions)
after youve done this a few times you should get a feel for when the car builds up grip again and swings back
Vain: I didn't buy the wheel for realism, I just wanted a comfortable wheel to drive, and compared to my sidewinder, this is like chinese water torture.

mrodgers: Hi mate, I've got a job now so I can't live on American time anymore, no more racing for me in the stupid hours of the morning.
I tried setting the force to your setting but the wheel turned on it's own, I couldn't stop it. I have it set on 50% now (overall, spring and damper all on 50%). I'm starting to get the hang of it, I got within one second of my pb on AS Nat with the FXR. Could have been faster but I took the corners slow because of the fear of the rear end swinging out, and Ihave to take the last chicane painfully slow otherwise the rear end goes AWOL.

Shotglass: I have a MOMO, I dread to think how hard it is to control counter steer with the DFP.
