lol u bitches hating on FIAT, the little brother of Ferrari. So nice. It's easy to hate. Still, Stilo is an exception to the family. And it's exception only if you've got yourself a JTD. I'm just trying to encourage anyone out there to find out for himself more into this badboy car. Besides a nice image and looks of car, you get a great diesel engine. You can easily cruise the engine up to a million kilometers. And you can be sure you've got a stronger car than VW/Audi's same engined car. What more can one ask from 3rd world's country.

Well it's nice to see how people think of this matter in EU and afaik this car is far far cheaper there too. Since we need to pay tax for import etc... It's not even cheap for us anymore then. If them Fix It Another Time bitch gets them more issues then DMF I'll let you know. Maybe even ask for advice how to fix it myself. The car has totally different image here. Many people have given it a chance. You'll find a many youtube vids on it on one of the Balkan languages all the while you're searching on English. And still it's a rare car too. Also every service boi has recommended it over 147 Alfa baby.

One of things I'd be interested in is how is chip tuning going with these engines. Any experiences out there. I'm not all up for chipping it, however interested to hear how it goes when someone braves into it.

The crap engines are usually because of emissions.

If you import a Skyline you have to do it through a few companies (Motorex is one of them) who will bring the car up to US safety standards. It costs an absolute fortune because its such a niche thing.

I don't know how it's legal, but I have seen one R32 (in RHD) in the US. Only Skyline I've ever seen.

Skylines other than the r32s imported back in the 90s by that company Motor-Ex are illegal. No matter if its a GTS GTT or GTR. Skykine R32s-R34s are on the federal banned vehicle list. The company stopped making vehicles compliant and instead just sold them straight up.

There're complicated loopholes, but prepare to spend mega-bucks. (it's not worth my time or effort to expand on such, so I won't bother) If you're hard up for one, your best bet is simply move to the land down under..

Supras and Skylines are a dime a dozen here.

There's quite a bit of DOT/safety standards BS etc mixed in as well. I believe when they hit 25y old that part can go out the window though.. if imported cars fall into the classic category the same way that is. (but I could be wrong)

Possibly so, but some of the "equivalent standards" aren't really so equal. I'm definitely not siding with the lame laws against them, just sayin.. Also, Nissan could have made US legal versions, like the billions of other cars they've properly sold here over the years, but chose not to. (of course our luck, their means of doing so would be to simply plop a US-approved "truck" engine of sorts in etc :facepalm

I know for sure that this is definitely true. I was helping my dad install an unbelievably small muffler to his Lotus Europa over the summer and he said that once a car is 25 years old, 90% of the regulations go out the window. I think there's only one (very loose) emissions test that counts anymore.

They aren't, they fall victim to a safety loophole.

Well, Japanese cars and safety.... They're basicly tinfoil so I don't really want to have a bad crash in one, I'll take my E36 for that.

I find it indeed really strange, in a country where in allot of states you can do basicly anything to your car and keep it street legal and still, those cars are banned because of that. Ah well, /firstworldproblems.

Just got my new stiffer springs, so car will handle a bit better. On some occasions I found the stock ones to soft for pure track use.

Just still waiting for those new lower control arms. Shifter is fully mounted now, works like a treat, hope to make a video soon of it in action.

There was never a LHD version of the Skyline from the factory, so it wouldn't have been quite that simple. The few LHD conversions that's been made have been really troublesome, as the exhaust is a real pain in the bum for mounting the steering axle, often causing people to squash to exhaust pipe and lose power as a result to have enough clearance. The Japanese also like to keep the best they have in the country. It can still be seen in the used car market, as the best and cleanest examples in auctions still often have "NO EXPORT" tags on them.

I think the car was designed as a JDM exclusive from the start, without ever even thinking about other markets. The engine has pretty much no emission devices at all since it was designed for racing. No EGR or anything else of the sort, which would be an instant no-go for most foreign countries. I also remember even simple things like replacing certain light bulbs on it required importing them over from Japan.

There is some domestic market protectionism in place, but all you have to do is try and carry a jap car door to understand why so many were banned from the US, I was shocked at how light the doors on my Surf (4Runner in the US of A, strange that these things were allowed in) were compared to those on my Ford Escort, they were a quarter of the weight while having electric windows. No roll over protection, no side impact protection, your face tends to be the crumple zone.

Land Rover Defenders fell foul of US safety standards, LR made them compliant (is why all US vehicles had cages), so the US gov't just changed the standards that made it financially impossible to retrofit into the Defender.
