as many of you know i recently re-installed windows, now before i wipe the old HDD i need (well, would like) to export my bookmarks (and possibley themes and extensions) into the version of Firefox on the clean install, how could i do this?
Copying your current profile should do the trick. That will export the bookmarks, and also your settings, themes, extensions, etc.
You can find it at X:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
Just store that somewhere else temporarily and paste it in the new installation.
Used that method all the time when I used to test the nightly builds often. Incidentally it causes a problem when using it on a newer version but if you're just using an official release it should work fine.
Before you format, go to 'bookmarks' then to 'manage Bookmarks'. Once there, go to 'file' 'export'. this will save you bookmarks as a file. Save this file on a floppy of something else, and when you have reformated, do the same, but 'import' bookmarks.
Don't know about the extensions though i'm afraid.
Say, something related to this, I'd like to format my computer, but I was wondering where my emails from outlook are stored, so I can keep them. I think I'm gonna buy a memorystick to put all these things on first, last time I burned a CD but it's such a waste.
If you're using a full version of Outlook, export them out to a pst file (File > Import and Export).
If you're using Outlook Express, they're stored in various places in different versions of Windows and OE. In XP its usually C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Microsoft, if I remember correctly. Its definately in Docs and Settings at least, and all in individual eml files.
They're all stored in a single file, in the firefox profile, called cookies.txt.
I'm using Outlook Express, for some reason it appears I haven't installed full Outlook, I had Office from my girlfriend, so at the moment I can't really get it back... And for finding my mails in eml files... No such luck, I'll try searching for them though, I'll try to keep you updated. But I'm still going to wait for a memory stick, I have to get one for next year anyways, but the problem is, I don't wanna pay for it myself, and my parents are kinda short on cash at the moment
For anyone that cares about my question, I kinda solved it. I didn't export my mails, but I was able to store my mails on another location. If you want to do this:
Open Outlook Express
-Go to "Tools", and then "Options..."
-Click the maintenance tab
-Click "Store Folder"
-Change this folder to wherever you want to save your e-mails.
Via the internet they give this whole explanation on how to back up your e-mail, but actually it's just what I said above, but they don't change the folder, they make you copy the address, paste it in "run", then copy everything to a new folder... But they said it much much more complicatedillepall
hmmm, i just copy the whole outlook data-folder usually. Always have to search 15 minutes to find it though But outlook stores all mailboxes as files by default, so you could just back up those. No special actions required I just mean to say.
ohyeah for the location, right click on a mailbox in Outlook, select properties and there you'll find the location.
I know now, but it was kinda a far fetched hidden try to find me place
Now it's just on my private hdd where nobody else can get to.
Now I can go start wondering who keeps going to porn websites on my guest account...
Oh yea, victor, don't know if you saw my thread about avaters, but could you tell me why my gif isn't moving? I tried everything (not really), but could you please help me out? (again)
when i save it and open it in my graphics editor and look at the properties of the file, it says it's actually a jpeg, so my guess is you saved as jpeg rather than (animated) gif
edit - pls post me the url of that thread and I'll move these posts there
got my old hdd in, gonna take the data into my temp copy of firefox to check it works and then wipe the drive
EDIT - erm, i went to H:\Documents and Settings\jakg\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles, (H: because this HDD is plugged into the clean install, and im not running that version of windows on the drive, and all i get is a folder called "ohj2fsji.default" which has two folders "Cache" and "Cache(2)", and a 2 mb "XUL.mfl" file, i copied the whole Firefox folder accross, no luck, gonna log off and back on again, see if it helps
Hmm, strange. It should have more than just two folders in there. Are you sure there aren't multiple profile folders in there? Like that "ohj2fsji.default" folder? (anything that ends with .default? It's a generated folder name)
You could try the program that the_angry_angel suggested, but as far as I know that just automatically does what I described manually.
The profile folder should look something like this:
