Quote from Gutholz :

No surprise there, they always mention the catering for the pit crews. Not nearly as bad as the barbeque specials in the Daytona 500 pre-race.
Sounds like Gidley had surgery on his left arm and leg, still under observation.
from earlier
Exept the Oak LMP2, LMP2 cars are much slower...
UPDATE:

Memo Gidley, driver of the No. 99 GAINSCO / Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP, underwent surgical procedures on both his left arm and left leg at Halifax Health in Daytona Beach, Florida. Gidley also has an unstable fracture in his back which will require additional surgery before he can be released from the hospital. He continues to be evaluated.

Matteo Malucelli, driver of the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 Italia, remained at Halifax Health overnight for further evaluation. He continues to rest comfortably. An update on his condition will be provided later today.
NASCAR. Ruined it all

They should do a 24H qualification race and then a 6 lap sprint for the watches. GREEN-WHITE-CHECKERED of course if needed.

Don't forget the jets, cheerleaders, Viagra as main sponsor (may cause death), rain delays...
What a stupid penalty. Hope they appeal it.

they were I believe. It almost seamed as if the Audi driver knew he had not got hit too...
Quote from PMD9409 :EDIT: Level 5 is reinstated into the first position.

This is the right call

Fox Sports 2 was junk. Don't know why you'd pay more to get it and watch commercials . It's about like Fox Sports 1

Stupid final caution actually . It must be an oval race
I still don't understand why NASCAR sticked to DP....that Corvette was just completely smashed and it was pure luck that Memo Gidley didn't die.

At least LMP cars can fly and no one hurt...plus they look much more 2014s, I'm not talking about how the BoP is ridiculous. DP pulling 1s away in the oval section and LMP2 catching into the technical sections and braking zone. DP got advantage at Daytona because of power but might be much slower into some more technical tracks.

At least this race confirmed that no way we see DP in Le Mans!

Errr.. If it was an LMP2 car [except the Mazdas] that hit that stationary 458 it most certainly would have been fatal since the 458 lifted up. What you would have seen would be nothing short of a decapitation. What saved Gidley was most definitely that it was a closed cockpit.

This is probably true.

LMP cars have carbon fiber crashbox that collapse, DP don't and basically their front was use as an LFS ramp. You said he was saved by the cockpit? It looks that it nearly killed him...Look where the tube is. That's definitely not as strong a state of art carbon fiber LMP chassis. if this crash happened with a LMP car the Ferrari would have not been lifted up, the crashbox of the LMP2 would have made the job to absorb the kinetic energy. The difference between DP and LMP2 is called FIA crash test.

What may have killed Gidley is that DP chassis are obsolete and nowhere FIA standard. Thanks god it's close cockpit but when the cockpit collapse that much that may actually be more a problem than a solution...

Many huge crash similar to this one have already occured in LMS/Le Mans/ALMS especially one at Silverstone in 2009 and nobody was badly injured in LMP

I mean, you know that photo was after they cut the roll cage open, right?

An open top LMP carbon tub won't save your head from a car riding up your nose... An LMP2 closed car is probably better equipped sure.. but there were only two of those at the 24 [both Mazdas]. So law of averages suggests that if an LMP2 car was to hit that 458, the driver would be in a much more horrendous state.

The type of incident that it was, ANY open top car would of been a coffin.
The DP is a "NASCAR" vehicle. So no doubt it will improve with some more r&d (the safety issues) but I don't think any fia car would have taken a impact like that much better tbh. There would still be injuries

The DP is far from "NASCAR" style safety. The car is in its 3rd generation and still has the safety specs of Trans-Am from the 90s. The terrible tube frame design will never touch Le Mans because it can't pass the FIA crash test.

A closed cocked FIA LMP1 or LMP2 is much much safer. If a LMP2 would have hit the Ferrari instead, the impact would have been absorbed much greater, keeping the driver safer overall. The only problem that would arise is the open cockpit design and if the Ferrari would climb up the LMP2 to the driver's head. I don't think the car itself would make its way that high, but I do believe I good size chunk of debris could.
Quote from DeadWolfBones :I mean, you know that photo was after they cut the roll cage open, right?

Yes ofc but if they have to cut the roof it was because the roll cage did move and it wasn't possible to extract the driver with the roof. Couldn't find a picture with its roof still on but my guess is that the roll cage didn't really survive. In comparison the pescarolo 908 that took off in Le Mans 2009 in front of my eyes (that was terrific) had absolutely no damage on the tube, same for McNish and Rocky's Audi.

As Phil said, for an LMP open cockpit debris would have been the issue rather than that Ferrari lifting on driver's head. By the way the shape of the front nose is also made to avoid that.

What I said was, since it is a NASCAR vehicle I think we can expect NASCAR to improve the safety of it. I was refferring to an open top LMP, which would stay the course as you said.
