The thing to be wary of is which two main colours to use. Even if you use more than 2 colours, the fade effect is a reaction of any two.

Some colours blend very well, others not so. It can be a timely exercise to get the right mix but after a while you learn that some colours don't mix well with others in a gradient fill or fade.

The method I use to make fades is not using a gradient fill. I make a base colour for the skin, then I take a copy of that "panel" and make it my 2nd colour, placing that layer over the first. Using interactive transparency I fade the top colour from a solid colour to invisible, this allows the bottom colour to shine through and seems to produce less steps (those vertical lines of colour as the fade shifts from one hue to the next) that are often seen with a gradient fill. This method also gives you complete control over the rate of fade. If your program supports transparency perhaps play with that method too and see what you can create.

It is also important to consider the strecthing of the skin as this can greatly effect the way your fade looks, especially at the mid point between the two colours. Experimentation is the order of the day, and trial and error.
PSP is just as powerful for this sort of graphics editting as PS, so don't let that bother you. And PSP is a lot more cumbersome for 'some' things, BECAUSE it's more powerful...

Hmmm, nice trick. Might try this one day...

I _knew_ there had to be a 'cleverer' way of doing gradients. There always is...
