sij: nouveau is the open source nVidia driver. What GPU do you have? It's possible the install DVD you're trying to use doesn't support the GPU yet. The closed source nVidia drivers have good support for the "newer" GPUs, my 970 works like a dream.
Try a different distribution, and then install the offical drivers afterwards. I used Ubuntu 14.04 (old version) but a newer version should work better.
No the issue is people are too lazy to take time and learn the software they are using. They expect nothing will go wrong so they don't need to learn how to change settings or do anything other than what they want to do. Lack of understanding of the technology you are using is the problem, not the object. Can't blame a gun for killing someone, just like you can't blame a computer for releasing private information when you don't know how to use it properly in the first place.
Must suck living in NZ, sounds like everyone is trying to steal each others identity there.
And this comes from a country were coffee cups have to be labeled "caution hot"...
Back to topic:

I do understand that stuff like Cortana relies on user information, but I'm not using it. Same goes for location services. I'm also not using Facebook and try to keep my private data private (hello cloud services...).
I'm "fine" (for lack of a better word) with all kinds of snooping/services as long as I have the ability to turn it ALL off or uninstall (i.e. xbox app). And that for the moment seems only be possible for the enterprise version.
That the data collecting is full on by default (opt-out) is questionable but in consens with the other "big" user plattforms (Apple, Android).
If you can't get even Ubuntu 15.04 to boot, you might want to use this fix: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 The section about "nomodeset" parameter if what you're after. The nouveau driver is almost completely reverse engineered and at least the part that handles desktop CPUs is completely unsupported by nVidia. Adding "nomodeset" parameter will prevent nouveau from loading and you'll have basic but working video output. Once you get to the desktop, you can install proprietary driver developed by nVidia through the "Additional device drivers" tool.
A few extra hints:
- You shouldn't have to add the "nomodeset" parameter permanently, nVidia driver installer will take care of that.
- Do not add any unnecessary kernel parameters unless you have a good reason to think that they will fix a particular problem.
- Always try to use 3rd-party drivers provided by the Ubuntu tool. Do not download and install them manually.
- Do not install 3rd-party drivers for a device that works. A lot of devices have decent open source drivers integrated into the kernel. 3rd-party drivers are usually pretty messy and don't play along nicely with the rest of the kernel infrastructure (yes, Broadcom, I'm looking at you!)
I guess then it's somewhat like those 'free' smartphone apps that generate revenue by sending personal data (of economic interest) to third parties?
I was always sort of "fine" with those since the tradeoff seemed to be public knowledge. You get the app, you lose privacy. Buy the paid version if you don't want to make that deal. But I'm unsure whether I agree with this model on operating systems. I concede that your average free android app basically has the same privileges as the system itself, so my reservation may be entirely subjective.
You really should try reading my links, that one was where we turned Queens Evidence and pointed out all the spying/stealing we did/do for the US, with all other parties who did/do named and shamed......
Def: Queen's evidence
Evidence for the prosecution given by a participant in or accomplice to the crime being tried.
(So I've called you out, show you have the %@((#$ to prove me wrong ! )
And Win 10 is just a continuation of the whole NSA data capture thing. How do I know ?, We (NZ) are a part of the whole thing and why anyone thinks NZ is this awesome sweet country completely escapes me. We spy on you and all your communications. So does Australia, Canada, UK, and US ov A.
And, as all the other parties do, as indeed do we (NZ), is to feed all this info back to the US.... (And (redacted)) (Because no one can ever talk about (redacted).)
As an even bigger 'joke', We apparently are not permitted to look at the info we capture cus it's "confidential".
So, when I point out the privacy issues that 10 gives, that's actually from a point of experience.
And, unless your private info can be used against you for advantage, who cares. BUT, business info, (worth $$$$) IS of interest.
I do wish people would grow up and realise the the whole concept of a free and open web NEEDS TO BE DEFENDED, if your in a country that allows such radical behaviour. (US, I'm looking at you !!!)
Cus, UK is clearly a joke, Canada has sold it's soul, and Aus have always been a bunch of US wanabees.....
Here's our PM (NZ) confirming what I've just posted above...
"But the Snowden papers show that counter-terrorism is at most a minor part of the GCSB's operations. Most projects are assisting the US and allies to gather political and economic intelligence country-by-country around the world.
Monitoring the Pacific nations is part of New Zealand's role as a member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance. Mr Key said in January that sending troops to Iraq this year was, for his Government, "the price of the club". He named the club as the US, Britain, Canada and Australia, the other Five Eyes members."
And other, lets see, 1 (US) +2 (UK) +3 (CAN) +4 (AUS) +5 (NZ) +(redacted)
"The second important disclosure by Snowden is the fact that all
NSA raw intelligence is immediately and spontaneously transmitted to
(redacted) by their own Intel proprietary contractors, who also just happen
to be major intel contractors responsible for running almost all
American cell phone billing and Congressional internet and
communications too."
That demo ran something like low 40 FPS for me on W7, now it's silk smooth 60 FPS with v-sync, 80-100 FPS when unlimited. Mind boggling difference.
Can't wait for games to start make use of DX12 performance.
Two and a half other things I really like :
Window focus is where you mouse is (a window doesn't have to be active in order for mouse wheel to work). OSX users will be familiar with it already.
Multi desktop - you can create virtual desktops (WIN + CTRL + D) and toggle between them with WIN + CTRL + left/right. Linux users will be familiar with it.
Classic case of better late than never
And the taskbar works on all monitors and can be set to only show the programs that are open on that window.
Really they could've just put those features in win7 and it would've been great os for years. Aside from DX12 that is ..
Window focus is where you mouse is (a window doesn't have to be active in order for mouse wheel to work). OSX users will be familiar with it already.
Yeah, that's nice. However I do wish that pointing the mouse over a taskbar icon would make the mouse wheel operate that program.
For example, on W7 I just selected Winamp from my taskbar, then scrolled the mousewheel to control volume.
Now on W10 I have to first select Winamp from taskbar to bring it up from backround, then move my mouse cursor over the actual program for volume control to work.
Yes it does, and I use them for playback control. The K70 volume roll only affects the overall windows volume slider.
Aaaanyway, it would all be much easier, if mouse over taskbar icon would just activate the roll function for that program. Maybe we'll see that by the time Windows 20 comes out.
Yeah, yeah, I've put tin foil around my tower, so I should be all right.
Screw international conspiracy; why is Media Player not free anymore? Deal with the real issues!
I bought a cheapo copy of 7 to upgrade to 10 for free, but happy to stick with 7 for now as it's fairly quick and reasonably unobtrusive.
A: We do the spying, why are you worried, unless you and your tinfoil have something to hide ?
B: Only Commie Mutant Traitor Scum (CMTS) provide free software. We Capitalists pay for our software with the Glorious Free Market.
Are you having a problem with the glorious free market ?
Perhaps we do need to monitor your behaviour........
C: There are no 'cheapo versions' of our wonderful software. You are clearly a CMTS who is stealing our wonderful money making software.
Please remain in your currently monitored location and agents of our glorious free market will be with you shortly to escort you to a re-education camp !
The way that reads to me is that windows doesn't really need to send stuff anywhere as they can just collect it on the server side because all your outgoing data has individual id. For example this is what ms said in that article:
"No query or search usage data is sent to Microsoft, in accordance with the customer's chosen privacy settings. This also applies to searching offline for items such as apps, files and settings on the device."
=
No need to send it as ms can just collect it on the other end because all bing searches contain individual machine id. And let's not forget 10 has built in software that not just sends an individual id but also looks for signs to figure out who is really using the computer.
With cloud systems, individual id'd communications and intent to collect all your data the windows doesn't need to send much anywhere because the user is already sending most of the data directly to ms. For example when you do a search windows doesn't need to send end any of that data automatically to collect it. They can just log the transmission on their end when a package with your name appears on their traffic.
