Yep, ditch Win98 and replace with an NT based OS. MS have dropped ALL support and bug fixes on this aging front end for MS DOS 6. I would not even recommend connecting Win98 to the net as it is unsafe.

All you need is direct X 7.

i put 9.0c onto it wouldnt be the graphics card would it giving me that message i am going to put windows 2000 onto it it wont hanlde xp
i have upgraded to windows 2000 and put the game files on it again and now i get the message cant load graphics. is this because of my graphics card.

what is the minimum system requirments to run this game anyway?

what graphics card do you have? what drivers do you have? tried deleting card.cfg?
did you just copy your lfs folder to the pc with win98 or did you do a fresh install? it is very likely that lfs is trying to run at a resolution not suitable to the older craphics card in this pc. one way might be to go to your better pc and change the settings in lfs to something like 640x480x16 60hz and make the game to start windowed and not fullscreen. then transfer the lfs folder to the 98 pc and try again.
maybe a fresh install is faster than this?

i have got rid of windows 98 now and i have windows xp and i have a different pc.

the problem is i have now the frame rate is no higher than about 11fps and the graphics now is really poor it is an onboard/built in and i have set 32mg shared for this only becuase the system memory has only 256mb but the question is what is the minimum requirements to be able to play this game at a reasonable rate and online with other players. i seem to keep upgrading parts thinking that this is going to solve and it doesnt. and to top it all off the pc is only for the missus so she can play at the same time as me

ok this pc has 256mb memory 900mg processor graphics is set at 32mb and is taken from the ram but why is it so cr@p to play the game

because your pc is so slow it doesn't even have enough ram to run windows properly?

but i was playing live for speed on this pc with only 256mb of ram before i went to 512 thats on this one anyway.

is the pc that slow is it?

it runs windows perfectly, thats not slow.

minimum/recommended system requirements now where can i find that.

XP needs 256 Mb ram (regardless of what M$ says), and theres 32 Mb of ram being taken off that, when you add that the processor is only 900 Mhz, and that some of that is being taken for the graphics, so its unsuprising LFS is slow

Oh well, it could be worse, some of the original XP pc's were "XP on a shoestring" and had 128 Mb ram, which made them.... liable to lock with a few folders open!
oh well she probably wont play it anyway
I used to play LFS just fine on Win98 on my Celery 433 with a basic ATi 9200SE
with all graphics turned down . It might be your graphic card drivers. Just how old are they ?
I think there still is a way how ÿou can play LFS on the rig you mentioned.

First, look if there are any newer drivers for your graphics available. AFAIK LFS needs DX7 fully compilant GFX an DRIVERS!!! to launch.

I recommend you to get back on Win98. It is not stable, it is not safe, but it is fast. Any NT-based Windows checks all the commands sent to drivers of important devices and that slows weaker PC down as hell.
But do this only when there are available newer GFX drivers for Win98. LFS runs under WinXP on your machine just because their drivers awareness of your onboard GFX.

And if you really want to play LFS on that PC more seriously, then getting some DX8.1 fully compilant GFX(can be crappy GF3/GF4 Titanium or some ooold AGP radeon) is a REALLY good idea. Hardware Vertex Shaders decreases CPU loadment a lot.
